Liteon 74850c (help Me Please)
« on: December 07, 2009, 02:06:00 PM »

Hey all.

So I have a Liteon 74850c.

I'm using the probe and the other bit has serial or USB hook up. I'm trying with USB.

The drive is being detected on the sata port. The com 3 says ready.

I can't for the life of me get this thing to make a connection, it keeps saying "WARNING BAD SERIAL DATA"

no matter what. I've tried booting up, cd half in etc. a million times.....
Its like the probe isnt touching anything connectable on the part....ive tried putting it in the little circle.. I've tried putting it on the bottom pad above the circle between it and the number.. but nothing....

if i touch the spear on the circle next to the proper one. the cdrom closes and i have to restart....so clearly its not the probe.

heres the thing... i had red ring on this thing and sent it back for RMA... i got the new one back but the lil hole that ur supposed to probe has like a gold trim around it and the others dont... it looks like its been touched before.... i scraped the gold bit off it came off easily.. like an old thin piece of speaker wire or something.. but still no connection.. and dont spam me saying i ruined it scraping the bit off because i tried for HOURS trying to make a connection while it was on there. but it straight out looks entirely different then the other holes..

the dvd rom still is recognized and still plays dvds.....

is there any other point that I can spear or anyone have any other ideas.. cuz im fresh out....
I'm using jungle flasher.... in windows if that matters.

Thanks in advance for any help.

try doing it through Dosflash. It may work better.

Personally Dosflash didn't work well during the reading portion for me. I initially tried using Dosflash with self made probe but I moved towards JF after little success with dosflash16. You may have better luck.

Are you using a CK3? Try using the serial interface on comm1? Was the drive flashed previously before you sent it back to MS for RROD repair. Sounds to me that piece of wire you scraped away was the way it was done before the probe/spear came out. I take it you are using Junglefalsher and the latest guide which tells you to do the half open trick prior to launching Jungle Flasher? You also mentioned it plays dvd,s fine, i take it plays original games too.

thx for the replies so far.

it plays originals
it plays dvds.

its NEVER played a back up.

I agree with the comment about previously being soldered perhaps. That was my first thought as well.
No the system sent back was NEVER modified or even opened.
It was returned with a faceplate. I received a system back with a fresh face plate and my original face plate sitting on top in the box. Leads me to think this isn't the original system returned.

My friend bought a new one after this one stopped working. Too lazy to RMA it.. so I did it for him and he said I could keep it.

But he doesn't like modding his stuff for fear of breaking so this was never touched. But like I said I dont think this is the original system I sent out.

As for the process... I believe with the amount of times I've done this and variations, I woulda had to of accidentally got it right regardless... but heres what ive done:

So the usb cable is in the usb port, the power is going to the power (the correct way) and the spear is hooked up and shows a blue and yellowish(i think) leds....

I flick the switch OFF
turn the PC on
flick the siwtch ON
eject the tray
flick the switch OFF
push it in half way
then my system is now at "choose OS, windows XP or windows XP" and counts down from 15
I flick the switch ON and the drive is powered on half way
I choose the OS
load up jungle flasher
choose the correct IO port
shows the drive info etc
choose the com3
says its USB and its ready
I touch the probe...to the spot
hit the dvd32(or whatever the button is called)
WARNING BAD SERIAL DATA
I try the probe on the pad on the board insted of the little hole...
WARNING BAD SERIAL DATA

other than that... I've tried not power the drive on until windows is loaded.. sometimes freezes windows.. otherwise same results....

no light changes when i touch the spear to the indicated points.. and im SURE its the right points(hole and bottom pad)...ill try and post up a pic of what im looking at.....

Same problem here with mcafee had to disable mc and reinstall. Jungle Flasher worked fine for me after that.
