Well this might sound scary to some people but I used a high speed rotary tool.  (aka Dremel grinder)

Here is what you do.

Use a very small cutting wheel. If you don't have a small one wear a big one down on a rock or something until it is less than half a inch in diameter.

Set your rotary tool at a low speed setting.

Hold circuit board and tool very steady. Make a few tiny taps until you clearly see you have separated the trace. If you are not sure check with a multi-meter but as you can see in my picture t should be really obvious.

Also it is good to note this is a single layer circuit board so you would have to grind really far to go thru to the other side and do damage.

I would love to hear from other experts on how they cut the traces.
Ask them if they have the lenline slimline in stock. It is probably a better brush for this type of detail work anyhow.

You're right, it does sound scary  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

I think I'm just gonna stick with the scalpel method... although, now that you mention it, I'm sure there are some precision files out there that would be perfect for this job... Should also be cheaper than a Dremel for someone who doesn't have one or doesn't need one.

I used a sharp knife to cut the traces, which isn't actually a hard deal at all! The soldering was a piece of cake, I'm still used to the 27 wire modchips for Xbox and Playstation 2.

Man, that is a pro tutorial right there.  Really nice job on the write-up, the pics, parts list, workflow...and clean solder skills.  If I ever have a need for professional services, you'll be at the top of my list.

Come to think of it, I've been planning to solder a NAND reader onto my system board and "go Haitian" on it to reverse the ban status, but I'm feeling lazy.  Is that a job you'd consider?  PM me if you want to discuss.

Amen to that, if anyone here thinks this is hard work try a 27 wire ps2 modchip, I still have nightmares !

Many thanks for the pics and info looks easy enough to me.

Excellent stuff!

What type/gauge of wire do you recommend using for this?

Thank you. I have never soldered before but I have no choice now. What is great flux?
I have just purchased Ersa RDS 80 soldering station where I can pick a temperature. What would you recommend?

I used 30 AWG kynar wire. Keep your wires short for best results.

For patching the traces after i used a peice of stranded wire from a dead benq drive i had here.

Most people use rosin flux but for best results you can use acid flux. WARNING if you use acid flux you need to 100% clean it up with some cotton swabs and flux remover. Acid flux is both conductive and corrosive, but did you see my solder shine! Makes it look more like chrome! I also am using solder that is 2% silver.

To everyone that has sent thanks messages. You're welcome. I spent over 2 hours putting that guide together. It is my way of giving back to a scene that has shared so much information with me.

Great guide thank you.

Can anyone recommend a complete soldering outfit that would make this project as easy as possible please.

I've done some soldering in the past but my current soldering iron is a little hefty for this job.
