Hitachi 79, Computer Freezing?
« on: November 29, 2009, 04:22:00 PM »

So. I have this weird problem with a stock Hitachi 79 fw drive. The thing is I can't even get it into mode b, whenever I connect it to the computer the whole damn thing freezes. This is what I'm using:

CK3 Pro (tried using console power as well)
standard VIA 6421a sata card (tried driver versions 530 & 581)
A pretty beefy comp running WinXP Pro
Jungle Flasher v0.67beta

CK3 has an onboard mode b switch. When I use that one, the comp freezes as soon as i flick it. If I use the console power, the computer freezes as soon as I power it on. This only happens when I use the VIA drivers, but if I don't use them I can't get any response from the drive (using portIO). Also, if I shut down the comp and power up the drive first, then turn on the computer, it will boot (will take a while longer than usual) but then the VIA card will have a yellow exclamation next to it, won't work. I tried using onboard intel sata controller, but that one doesn't even register the drive.

I should point out that the drive works perfectly fine, and runs original games without a problem.

Help, I can't figure this damn thing out, is it even possible to mod this drive?

u need that yellow ! next to via. delete the driver as the jungle flasher tutorial says to and trust that it will work when you use portio.

That would be swell, but I tried that and it doesn't work. I cycle the ports and there's nothing. Like the drive isn't even connected at all. I followed JF instructions to the letter, but they describe the WinAPI method in detail without even touching on PortIO method. WinAPI obviously doesn't work in my case, but PortIO doesn't either. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Btw, I've modded dozens of drives, Hitachis, Samsungs, Benqs and Lite-Ons, so I know what I'm doing, this shit just doesn't work... I tried everything I could think of and still nothing. I'm thinking my best chance is PortIO method, but I don't know how to make JF see the drive.

first mistake, mode b switches are for pre 78 drives will not work with 78/79 drives leave that off
second mistake, via drivers installed.remove then as per the jungleflasher tuturial and make sure you have portio for hitachi enabled by going into dvdkey and unchecking via only then rechecking via ,you should have status 39 card found
third mistake, expecting drive to show in jungleflasher, with drivers removed and using portio for hitachi the drive will never be assigned a drive letter ,so will never show in the drop down list as a drive and MIGHT NOT show as a drive under port properties ,but as long as when you send mode b with jungleflasher the drive replies with a done message in the running log you will be ready to run the 79unlock audio disc in order to dump the drive.

Nope, that doesn't work either. It just doesn't respond to mode b command.

Drivers removed, CK3 Pro shows blue light (mode a?), JF 0.67b, only two sata ports on VIA card, neither works. What else can I try?

I'm not. Just a regular desktop with a PCI sata card. I do have a PCMCIA version as well, I tried it on my laptop also, same thing. Just doesn't want to respond at all or freezes the computer when used in WinAPI mode.
