Hitachi Backups Freezing And Pot Adjustment
« on: November 11, 2009, 12:56:00 PM »

I recently flashed the 1.51 firmware to my hitachi rev47 drive but was getting odd noises when attempting to play backups like it was struggling to read the discs. This was followed by the message "open tray" (retail discs worked fine)

Doing some reading I found that adjusting the POT of the drive may fix this issue. Sure enough, by turning up the power of the laser it was able to read my backups. However, when I turn up the POT to the point where it can read backups they will freeze - usually in less than 5 minutes. This will also cause retail xbox 360 games to freeze as well.

My question is this - since I can't seem to find a point on the POT where it can read backups and not freeze is there anything else I might do to get around this problem short of replacing the entire drive? I had the thought of trying different media but i'm looking for other alternatives. My understanding is verbatim should be one of the better choices for backup.

If it does come down to replacing the drive what is the best drive to replace it with these days?

FYI

I am using verbatim DVDR+DL discs and they have been checked with abgx(sp?) and it finds no errors.

Thanks in advance

I gave up on pot adjustments all together. I was doing them for $20 but so many people were coming back a month later with same problem. I now only install new lasers or replace drives.

If you are going to replace it everyone loves benq!! (or lite-on even)

You could also grab a laser and try that but if you don't enjoy messing around just get a new drive.

The freezing issue has me concerned. Freezing is often not a drive issue. It could be a sign that RROD is on it's way.  Try installing a game to your hard drive and playing it that way. If console still freezes you have bigger problems then a laser.

Thanks for the reply - not what I was hoping to hear but it was what I was expecting.

Let me know if anyone else has an idea that they think may work.

my xbox used to freeze all the time while playing a retail rip of gta 4. it was also unmodded at the time, but installing it to my harddrive helped a lot
