Need Help Retrieving 7 Series Key From Liteon Drive
« on: October 28, 2009, 11:48:00 PM »

I've tried making a homemade probe and after several tries I was unable to retrieve my key. I bought the 360 USBXtractor and power dongle - as seen here http://www.usbxtractor.com/ and got the drivers installed and have tried JF and Xtractor reader, both don't work... Here is my problem. when I touch the usb spear/probe to the R707 point I get nothing, no light at all.. I have tried other points and have seen dim blue light, bright blue light, and temporaraly a dim blue light and a green light at the same time - but again the R707 gives me nothing. Maybe I shorted it using the homemade probe, i don't know but I have tried the point under the board as well and nothing.. Anyone encounter this? any fix? could I bridge R707 if so how do i do it and where do i touch the probe after the bridge? or are there any alternate points? I heard of R57 but that did not work either. Thanks

Does this drive even work any more? Put it back in your 360 and boot a original game. If it still plays games then you might be able to get some help here. If probe is not lighting up then something sounds really broken.

I did just put it back together and it boots up fine and i threw a game in there and it went right into the game, i just turned it off after about 10 secs in game due to the frustration of this whole process. But suffice it to say - the drive works fine.

Also I would like to know if its possible to short out/break the R707, I am fairly convinced that this happened because I cannot get any read from it at all. nor can I get anything from the R52 either. So if the R707 is shorted or whatever what can be done to resurrect this and retrieve the key?

Hi.

You should use a sharp pocketknife and try cleaning around the pad in front of the r707.  If you can see a nice glint of metal, you should be in good shape.

And while i don't recall the full instructions, i believe if you do bridge the r707 with solder, i think you should be able to get the key without using a spear.

I've been trying to look up information on this.  I still don't understand fully how to get the key after soldering the two points at R707, without the probe how do i get the key to the computer?  do I connect a wire somewhere else or is it transmitted through SATA to the computer?

Are you sure your Liteon isn't a 83850?  The probe won't light up on R707 if it is, and you'll need to follow a different procedure to extract your key.

The drive itself says 74850C under F/W ver.

I had this picture in my bookmarks showing the alternate points in RED.

(IMG:http://xbox-experts.com/pics/liteonalt1.jpg)

When you solder r707 the serial signal is sent thru the dvd power connector to the serial interface. Make sure on your DVD power cable that you have 12 wires. (you really only need 11 but f you have all 12 then i know you will get it right!) The power cable that comes with the 360 only has 10. The 2 spares are TX and RX. Then on your homemade extractor solder a wire from your probe lead to TX point.

Every lite-on i have ever done here is done this way using my homemade extractor.

Here is why!

When you use the probe method that means for lite-on's power connector goes in upside down and all other drives it goes in the other way. It is just a matter of time before you mess up and toast a drive. The connectors plugs in upside down way too easy!

With the probe you are poking around at live circuits. It just seems risky if you are not carful. once i solder r707 i inspect and test with my multimeter. Reassamble drive and then read the key. It has nevered failed me ever!

So if your not getting the data from r52 point then either your tool does not work right or you did fry the TX in the lite-on. (be thankful it still works)

To test your tool you would need to get another LO74 drive and verify everything is working.

So are you saying solder a wire from the probe and plug it into the Tx on the power cable, after I would do that do I need to probe around anywhere with another probe or bridge anything?  Do I actually need to solder onto the R707 point using this method or just have the wire into the power connector??

I am confused lol

You bridge the two points at r707 together. That then makes the TX connection complete all the way to the DVD power connector. I just hold a tiny 30awg wire with a bit of flux on it over the points and touch it with my soldering iron for a second and trim any extra wire with a razor blade.

Once thats done you don't ever need to probe anything. As long as you have added the extra missing TX wire to the dvd power cord and wire that signal into your TX to serial converter.

I tried twisting a wire around my probe, had good contact around it. and other wire into the dvd connector.  Used a screwdriver to bridge the points - heard it worked for some.  and pressed get key in dosflash64 in windows 7 and after extracting 10 times all keys showed all 0's..  what if there is a short somewhere along the line for the tx, i am afraid of that.  is there any way to check that and verify it is shooting the key out?

dosflash 64 works sometimes and others dosent i myself woldent use that to extract a key flash yes but not to get key i would stick with jf as i know it has given me the correct key on every drive if have done ,if there was a short i would assume it woldent give any key or would spit out one like your getting
if you can find a 32 bis os i would give jungle flasher a try or iprep might work to get key
i would save all the arsing around myself with wires and such forth and just buy ck3 or some such tool i like my ck3 because or the pptc circuit  i cant blow anything up with that  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
i would rebuild the tool your using to see if you haven't missed  anything ..

You can test your serial device by doing a serial loopback test.

Loopback Test Instructions

You can test for shorts if your multimeter has a continuity tester. Start by putting one lead into R52 and test to make sure there is continuity going to r707. (mine beeps when there is)

Then also test for continuity at R709, R708 and R710 there should not be.

My next step will be to buy a multimeter and run continuity tests.  Thank you for telling me how to do this but one question remains,  If I am able to determine that there is NO continuity going to r707 what do I do then? Am I SOL?  Or is there any other methods of recovering the key besides using the mentioned steps already?
