Flashing With A Netbook?
« on: October 17, 2009, 10:33:00 AM »

I plan on flashing several Xboxes in the near future, however, I don't have my desktop PC anymore. The only computer I have at the moment is my Aspire One. I've done some research and it should be possible. However, before spending 60€ on the necessary equipment, I'd like to make sure it'll work.

I plan on buying:
  • a USB to SATA cable (the internet is full of confusing info whether those work - however the problem was mainly with DOS not supporting USB - since all drives can be flashed through Windows nowadays, this shouldn't be a problem, right?)
  • Xecuter Connectivity Kit v3 Pro
  • an external Molex power supply (does such a thing exists anyways? what are the other alternatives besides using the Xbox itself to power the drive?)

Will it work? Is this all I need (besides the screwdrivers, obviously)? Thanks a lot! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

as far as external molex goes, if you have an older external drive enclosure, they have molex power in them u can hijack for your ck.  i've also seen molex to wall plug power adapters.

also, i personally recommend maxis products, but maybe that is just me.

Maxis? Hmm, can you elaborate on that a bit? 'maxis xbox 360' on Google just outputs a lot of useless info ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

same here when i first starting flashing. read alot of places that said the usb to sata does NOT work so stay clear. other wise it was hit a miss with laptop add on cards. worked for some and not for alot of others. the best way is buy an old cheap xp machine. got mine for like 40 bucks on ebay. old peace of moniter at a thrift store.
as for dos you will probaly need dos at some point. jungleflasher is bad about freezing in windows and atleast with dos you recover the drive. in my experince there is no way i would mess with a drive if i didnt atleast have the dos option open. i do use jungleflasher but from time to time it will hang on me i will need dos to recover my drive

the power kit and probe i use

You will be very interested in knowing that inside your aspire one is a SATA controller that is untapped.

Check out this link - http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2009/03/10/mod...pire-one-esata/

The only problem i see with this is we don't know how compatible this sata port is untill someone trys it.

The other option is even more painfull. The aspireone has a mini pci express port. Maybe you could find a way to adapt a via6421 pcie card to work with mini pcie. I assume a bit of googling and you could find a pin out.

I have personnaly installed a touch screen and bluetooth in one of these then got bored with it and sold it.

Are you a skilled enough modder to attempt any of my ideas?

Honestly none of this will work for the actual flashing of the drive; at least in my experience. I have a rosewill eSata ll express card for this laptop, and no matter what I have tried I cant get the drive recognized in any of the available flashing programs (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) But oddly enough I can use the card to rip games from the drive on the
laptop... I wish I could give you better news but that's all I got for the moment.

My EEE 1000H worked fine with HDDhackr but I haven't tried it with a DVD drive yet. They usually have a ICH7M chipset which should be compatible. Of course you might need a SATA extension cord or something to connect to the drive.

USB-to-SATA only works with Hitachis.
