Originals always work. You don't need activate.iso to play an original.
With respect - because I typically agree with much of what you say - your comment is not accurate. If you have iXtreme 1.51 or lower, you'll be forced to upgrade to 1.6 in order to play all new Wave 4 games (Hitachi's not included). This includes rips AND originals!
In addition, until a new firmware version is released (and I doubt it will happen soon), the active.iso disc - or one-shot boot method - will have to be used to boot all Wave 4 games...INCLUDING originals.
Remember, when they released the 1.51 & 1.6 versions of the f/w, they built in (hard-coded) a "safety net" of sorts in that the f/w will NOT boot ANY game that includes data it wasn't programmed to recognize. It recognizes the correct stealth and video data up to (and including) Wave 3. Wave 4 games WILL NOT be recognized by the f/w and, therefore, will not boot without using the activate.iso disc. It doesn't matter if they're original retail discs or rips. Either way, both will contain Wave 4 data so they won't boot on the current 1.6 f/w - again - without using the one-shot boot method.
The only possible exception to this is with Hitachi drives. They're still stuck with iXtreme 1.51, and according to the most recent info, those drives will be able to boot Wave 4 games with 1.51 f/w.
Logic confirms this if you think about it. When we validate stealth and video data through ABGX360 we're attempting to ensure our rips include retail (or ORIGINAL) game data. If the activate.iso disc is required to boot validated Wave 4 rips - and they're supposedly the exact same thing as an ORIGINAL - then logic would say an original wouldn't boot without the activate.iso disc either.
Originals WON'T play without it - if the original is a Wave 4 game.
