i am not in a position to really say but i hear from a lot of  modders and  game rippers that AGBX may have to be a thing of the past, does any one else think this the case ? I mean AGBX being non existent ..

ABGX does too much and is too efficient to just go away. Mulleter isn't used anymore and if it is that may be something of the past. I used to use Mulleter, but ABGX is so clean and user friendly and well built. Also their site even says they are making 1.0.2 and it seems they will be around as long as they can.

Originals always work.  You don't need activate.iso to play an original.

Total BS.  Put down the crack pipe.

You sure about this? When wave3 came out, and I was on wave2 fw, my unit would not recognise wave 3 originals until I re flashed to 1.51

With respect - because I typically agree with much of what you say - your comment is not accurate. If you have iXtreme 1.51 or lower, you'll be forced to upgrade to 1.6 in order to play all new Wave 4 games (Hitachi's not included). This includes rips AND originals!

In addition, until a new firmware version is released (and I doubt it will happen soon), the active.iso disc - or one-shot boot method - will have to be used to boot all Wave 4 games...INCLUDING originals.

Remember, when they released the 1.51 & 1.6 versions of the f/w, they built in (hard-coded) a "safety net" of sorts in that the f/w will NOT boot ANY game that includes data it wasn't programmed to recognize.  It recognizes the correct stealth and video data up to (and including) Wave 3.  Wave 4 games WILL NOT be recognized by the f/w and, therefore, will not boot without using the activate.iso disc.  It doesn't matter if they're original retail discs or rips.  Either way, both will contain Wave 4 data so they won't boot on the current 1.6 f/w - again - without using the one-shot boot method.

The only possible exception to this is with Hitachi drives.  They're still stuck with iXtreme 1.51, and according to the most recent info, those drives will be able to boot Wave 4 games with 1.51 f/w.

Logic confirms this if you think about it.  When we validate stealth and video data through ABGX360 we're attempting to ensure our rips include retail (or ORIGINAL) game data.  If the activate.iso disc is required to boot validated Wave 4 rips - and they're supposedly the exact same thing as an ORIGINAL - then logic would say an original wouldn't boot without the activate.iso disc either.

Originals WON'T play without it - if the original is a Wave 4 game.

Yep, you are right, I stand corrected.  It was my understanding that iXtreme firmwares first checked to see if the game was an original, and if it was, it did nothing.  I was either wrong about that, or it's not working as intended (much like iXtreme 1.51 isn't working as intended for non-Hitachi drives).  Sorry for passing along bad information and I appreciate the cool way you corrected me without being confrontational.

Well, sort of, except they're not the exact same thing as an original, or else they would boot without hacked firmware, and you wouldn't be able to rip them with any old ISO utility.  Data is in different locations on a backup, and the iXtreme firmware just makes it look like those bits are in the original locations when the 360 requests them.  I'm certain iXtreme could determine backups from originals, so why it doesn't is surprising.

I'm at an admitted disadvantage here because I'm about to comment on a topic that I'm not 100% educated.  Keep that in mind...

I'm testing my memory here...but I thought it mainly had something to do with the actual media being used. In other words, the stock f/w checks/validates (somehow?) the actual media (or looks for coding specific to what M$ uses for prints) and then boots the game.  Since rips aren't on the same media, custom f/w was required - for this and about a hundred other different reasons.

I could be way - and I do mean way - far off on that though.

So you're say that original wave 4 games wont play on 1.6 unless you use the active iso? WOW, modern warfare 2 is going to be out soon and I don't think I can wait for a custom firmware update to be able to play it and I don't want to use the active iso. Is there any way around this?

So I saw this elsewhere,

QUOTE
Got a banned box, or don't play on Live?

Having Wave 4 problems, but don't want to or can't get your 360 flashed with newer firmware?

Then check this out ... we (me and a crony of mine) have checked this out on multiple banned boxes, and it works every time.

Get an untouched ISO of a Wave 4 game ... we used Cars Race-O-Rama.

Open the ISO with WinRar or any other program that will open an ISO.

Find the folder called $SystemUpdate and copy it onto your desktop, or some other easily found location on your computer.

Grab yourself a USB memory stick and put the contents of the folder ... not the folder, just what's in it ... on the root of the memory stick.

Patch the ISO as you normally would with a Wave 3 patcher.

Burn the disc as normal.

Insert the memory stick into a USB socket on your 360.

Open the 360's tray and pop in the freshly burned disc.

Turn off the 360, then turn it on again.

You will be prompted for an update.

Accept the update.

The console will update then reboot.

That's it ... your 360 will now play patched wave 4 games.

Is it risky by any means? Anyone willing to give it a try?

Ok so i tested it out. I wasn't able to update the dashboard like they said to do it, but I connected to xbox-live and updated the dashboard then burned the iso using a wave 3 patcher on a lite-on 1.51 and was able to boot the game. I don't play on xbox-live so not really a problem for me, those wanting to play on live should wait for a new firmware.

I too can confirm this works.
My last ditch effort since the Hitachi I'm using refuses to cooperate and dump properly.

@Lancer - To access the system update properly, you have to use a program like wx360 to extract it. Using winrar to open the iso doesn't work properly. You end up getting around 9 different files. You should be getting the folder '$SystemUpdate' with two files, "su20076000_00000000" & "system.manifest", at which point you should follow the guide and put the folder on the root of your thumb drive.

Hope this helps anyone else who decides to use this work around.

Also, as stated in the original post, this is only for people who  don't go on xbox live [i.e. me] or are banned.
