Hitachi Bricked? Mode B? No Key! Ahhhh!
« on: October 13, 2009, 10:56:00 AM »

Hello all I'm new to the forums and to the mod'ing scene but everything seems great and I love it. Anyways lastnight I bought a PCI SATA card (chipset vt6241a) and then followed jungleflasher and a shit ton of other tut's to try to get my Hitachi (FW46 i'm pretty sure) into Mode B. I tried for hours with no sucess, i switched ports, switched pci ports (even tho windows was seeing the Card.
I tried using that "special" version of slax (pSlax) and tried as many methods as possible of trying to get it to read my Hitachi but no dice. After reading even more it seems people all use Slax 2.1 not this pSlax crap so that is something I must try.
After this we tried using JungleFlasher to auto put it into Mode B. Guess what?? No dice again. I followed the entire tutorial and probably should have searched for more documentation but i disabled the VIA drivers, i was using IOPort (after i installed it of course), restarted my computer, checked all my connections and opened JungleFlasher up, selected the special Hitachi tab and of course, my drive wasn't showing up their. I was told that the VT6421a (i dunno if the a on the end is important or not as i've seen people with the l chipset) but anyways i was told that the PCI SATA card with that chipset was great flashing almost everything and was compatible with Slax and pSlax. Anyways after tinkering a little with JungleFlasher I was unable to get that to see my drive or put it into Mode B.
Finally (well almost finally) after this didn't work we tried the 2 wire trick into getting it into Mode B and I think this is where i went wrong. it took me a second to figure out howto get the wires into the little white plastic thing then common sense hit me in the head and made it super easy. I pulled the 9 and ground wires out of the white plastic part (side that connects to dvd drive) then i jammed my own wires in it and connected them to the corresponding black wires so it still had a straight connection. So i plugged my little white plastic rigged power cable into the Drive got ready to touch the connections i created together to get this thing going (i used red wire to go into the white plastic part and hooked the red part up to the black wire that was already part of the cable before i "modified" it) and at the red-black wire connection part i held each of them together, turned on the 360's power and let it go after about a second. this didn't work of course and we tried touching the wires together at sep times and nothing worked.
***I found a much better way of doing 2 wire trick and also if anyone can help me understand where i would put the 1k resistors that would be a big help as i'm going to do that for whenever i do get my drive fixed***
I believe somehow some wires got crossed during this 2wire trick towards the end when me and my buddy were tired and now I can't even get the Hitachi to open up. My xbox will still load up but whenever i push the eject button (1, 2, 3, however many times) it doesn't do anything but the green light on front will blink once. I'm assuming my drive is bricked but I don't know for sure, if it is bricked can i still get the key off of it w/o a programmer? Any help would be so greatly appreciated you can post or even email me at jconnpow at gmail dot com .

P.S. I don't know if this has anything to do with my failures to flash but I was trying to get my drive into mode b so i could get the key from it and replace it with a samsung drive a friend is giving me. my hitachi that i think is bricked was broken before tho, discs wouldn't spin, i think their was something wrong with the motor in it or there was something in the internals that was keeping it from spinning well because i was getting the "unplayable disc" error (fixed the magnet) and it still gave me probs, then i noticed it would "stutter spin" it would start to spin a little bit and do that for a couple seconds then give up. Again i'm not sure if that could be fixed if my drive isn't bricked but thank you all for your help. Have a great day
