Maybe A New (new) 83850c Firmware Out

QUOTE(astrosaber3 @ Nov 5 2009, 03:09 PM) *

C/P from ABGX
"One of the ways Microsoft can detect you being a dirty, filthy pirate is to scan this video to make sure it matches with what is supposed to be on the disk, so to protect you, the firmware itself does a quick checksum of it and if it doesn't match with known video data, it wont boot. Every now and then, this video changed, with each change being called a "wave"."
End of C/P

If M$ can "check" the video partition for validity, why the hell not can't they detect what firmware is on any DVD drive?  All M$ has to do is check the "checksums" on any given line of the code (firmware).  Running modified firmware would generate a different checksum for the modified areas in the firmware.  All they need to do is look at one checksum value - stock firmware has one value while modified ones will have a different value.  All it takes is one line of code in the firmware changed, and that line will have a different checksum.

When you turn on a 360, it runs through a self dignostic check.  It would be very simple to write 360 firmware (dashboard code) that checks the DVD rom when you turn on the 360.  Currently our 360 checks the DVD drive during bootup.  This would be the best time to check DVD rom firmware.

With all the bans over the years, and nobody has even the slightest clue what M$ is detecting to trigger a ban.  I believe it's as simple as the 360 checking certain sectors (blocks) of the DVD rom f/w.  With all the xbox360 can do (speed, graphics, etc), are you gonna tell me that they can't check firmware on the DVD rom drive?  M$ has complete control over the DVD rom drive, they have to - otherwise nothing would boot PERIOD.

The firmware is not digitally signed, there's no way to check. That's the whole point of the mod AFAIK. And before getting out the paranoia machine, if you were microsoft and you could detect hackers wouldn't you just ban -everyone- and ruin the scene entirely? There would be no downside to that for MS. No, they do it by other means. They load up data on you over a 4-6 month period and if you play too many games that would fail verification or play stuff too early then you go on the list for a ban 4 months from now. Thats why it seems so random, because they stockpile the bans. It probably has nothing to do with any recent games at all like people tend to think on the banning threads.

WTF is this? So what your saying is M$ can read a disk then they  must be able to read the firmware? can you lick you elbow? how about a firends elbow. i just like elbows.

pretty sure they cant see the firmware, as i have myself have been told many times.

whats this got to do with the 83850c anyhow, are you sugesting if m$ can check the firmware in a sence they must be able to read it over sata, hence there must be a command to read the firmware of the new 83850c or 938 via sata?

Ya it doesnt make sense, user doesn't know what he's talking about.  Also don't most of the drives have to be put in vendor mode to read data anyway?  They are purposely trying to make it HARDER to read the friggin firmware, not easier.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I mod consoles in Sydney, Australia. Had a guy get a console back from repair last week and it had his BenQ drive still in place.

It depends on what the problem is. If they decide to replace the DVD drive then sure, your screwed for the moment, but they don't replace the DVD drive 100% of the time. So think positively and keep hope!!

I agree. Why would they fix something if it is not broke.  Unless they give you another console.

Ive sent machines back with totally working drives in there to get back the same machine with new motherboard and drive, its easier for them to replace a MATCHING new motherboard and drive rather than reflashing your old drive to a new motherboards key. Obviously all 360s going back are for a motherboard fault - hence most of the time you will get a new drive. Allthough I have sent a flashed one back and got a new motherboard with the same flashed drive back once.. haha

Hey guys, I just wanted to add that it doesn't seem that Xbox's manufactured early August are affected. My build week is 0932X. My drive build date is July 2009. The drivekey dumped using JungleFlasher no problem and I successfully spoofed a BenQ drive with the drivekey.

To anyone in the US that knows/has experience....

I am in the US now but just visiting, and decided to buy 2 elites (holiday bundle pure/lego batman).  A friend offered to buy them through Amazon, to avoid tax, shipping, etc...

The thing is I opened them and they have July drives. Now I know these are like 99%? likely to be able to be read, however since I have seen several posts with exceptions, I'm starting to freak out....  specialy since I'm not *home*, I don't have my stuff to actually attempt to read it, and I don't have enough time left before I go back to return them to Amazon and buy at a B&M store...

So, the question would be....  I know it's not right, but would I screw anyone (non modder) if I bought at a B&M and swapped the cases? I mean, nothing's wrong with my xbox except the possibility of it maybe not being able to have it's key read, which 99% of buyers won't do...  So anything at all?? What about the real serial number? registration? etc?

Other than the fact that it is completely illegal as far as I know.  The case will say one serial and the console will say another.  If that person ever had to send it in for repair, there would be a definite problem.

The chances are that July Lite-ons will have no problem being read.  I still have a feeling that the people who reported otherwise might not know enough or did not do it properly

Yeah, I think that too, since most of the time "proven" things don't work, it's most certainly a user problem... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Anyway, I know it's not right but just don't wanna be stuck with an unredable drive... Specially cause where I live it's practically impossible to buy games, and the ones you may find the may ask up to 100 bucks for... totall insane.... If I had more time I would just return it to Amazon and buy B&M, but I don't for the time it implies having it shipped back, etc...

I was just thinking if the serial number is anywhere else, besides the case and the sticker on the front behind the faceplate. Is it anywhere else that coudln't be swapped?  Internally as to the funtioning maybe?  (Is that the same number they track when they ban you, or is that a completely different number?)

This is a little off topic but, MS wont even let me send consoles back to them.  They started calling my phone and asking for business licenses and receipts.  They sent my last 3 consoles back with new warranties but not fixed.  And i got a big letter in my email:

QUOTE

We need you to provide a copy of the purchase receipt which clearly indicates the date of sale and the name and address of the store from which the console was purchased. You can do this by simply responding to this email with a copy of your receipt attached.   Please follow the instructions below:

1.       If you have access to a scanner, scan the receipt.  You can also use the camera on your mobile phone or a standard digital camera to take a picture of the receipt.  If you purchased online, a screenshot of the receipt will suffice.

2.       Ensure the file (attachment) is less than 1 megabyte in size.  If your file is larger, your mail may be rejected by our system.

3.       Send your attachment in JPG, GIF, or TIF format.  This minimizes the file size, and also ensures that we can open your file successfully.

4.       Respond directly to this email with your attachment (the purchase receipt file).  Please note that you must respond to this email for us to proceed with warranty validation. If you do not use the reply option to this email we will be unable to relate your response to your service request and your resolution will be delayed.

We will monitor your service request for your response.  If we do not receive a response within seven (7) business days, the request will be closed.

Please note: this email can only be used for proof of purchase related issues. We do not monitor this email for any other purpose and you will not receive a response from us.

We hope you continue to enjoy your Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, and we thank you again for your valued support..

Marc

Xbox Customer Support

not sure what the big deal is, as they state on the top of there repair site:

QUOTE

Register a Console - The registered consoles that are associated with your Windows Live ID are listed below. You can register as many consoles as you want.

O and by the way, they sometimes send older drives back, just depends on the problem with the console.

Personally i have yet to see this new drive, i think as of right now everyone is more worried about the ban wave then this new drive not being able to be modded.

Now all you flamers go ahead and flame me for talking about something else, As i love the attention.
