I am thinking your Optic is crapping out.

Slim optics aren't lasting very long.  If you have a Lite On 16d4s - probably the case.

As for playing dvd movies, that very same optic processes movies thru a different route ... I believe - but could be very wrong.  So - the laser might fire, but a diode in the line could be dead.

Or maybe your Spindle motor is crapping out.  Games discs have to spin much faster than dvd movie discs.
