Using English Audio On A Pal Game?
« on: February 07, 2005, 07:46:00 PM »

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes.

Would it be possible to put the English audio files from the NTSC version of a game onto the PAL version? So in other words using English audio but the rest of the game would be completely PAL.

Well, in theory I suppose it would be possible.  But the real determining factor would be whether or not anyone has written a sound importer/exporter for the particular game you want to swap the audio on.

That depends on whether or not the audio files are stored in individual files or stored within a larger recource file.

Which game are you talking about?  Knowing that would probably get a few more informed people helping you figure out what can or cannot be done.

Different games really, I was hoping that I could play the PAL version but with English audio so I could make use of the extra resolution for games that don't really benefit from the extra frames of NTSC.

Some games that are on my mind are Metal Arms: Glitch In The System, Soul Calibur-2 and Shenmue-2.

Are Xbox games like PC games? As in they almost always have seperate folders for audio/video, etc? Or is it common for console game files to be merged?

Most PAL games are in English anyway (or have a choice of languages) - anyway, I believe it is possible with some games (FIFA springs to mind, but I'm sure there are others).

Is it a lot of trouble to make an inporter/exporter for a game? No universal ones?

I know for a fact that Soul Calibur 2 has both English and Japanese voices in the game.  You just need to switch the setting in the Sound Options.

As for other games, "Yes" it's hard to write sound importers/exporters, and "No" there are no universal ones.  Almost every game company has a different way of handling the audio portion of a game, so you would pretty much need a different tool for every company - if not every game.

Also, it is pretty hard to write the importers/exporters.  No only do you have to be familiar with all the various possible audio formats, you also need to know or figure out how the game companies stored the audio files in the game.  For instance, did they compress them, did they remove the headers, did they use a standard format or did they create their own, did they encrypt the data, do they use some sort of data verification to keep people from modifying the sounds...

Heh, seems like a lot of work and know how would be needed. Do you know of any importer/exporter for any game? Just curious if anyone took all that trouble to make one.
