Hardware has seen the largest year-to-date revenue drop, down 13 percent from $3.57 billion in 2009 to $3.09 billion so far this year, while 2010 software sales of $4.93 billion in 2010 are running 8 percent behind the $5.36 billion at this point last year. Accessory sales were up five percent for the year so far, from $144 billion through September '09 to $1.52 billion currently for 2010.

Though NPD no longer publicly reveals specific numbers or relative rankings for monthly system sales, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg revealed via Twitter  that the Xbox 360 sold 483,989 units in September, a 37 percent increase over September last year. This makes September the best sales month yet in 2010 for the system, which is up 34 percent year-to-date over this point in 2009.

NPD's analyst report indicates the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 were down compared to the same month last year, meaning the systems sold less than 462,800 and 491,800 units, respectively, for the month.

I think it happened a few days ago. Not 100% sure why. My guess is Sony didn't want comparisons of Move to Kinect sales and was sick of being last... huh anyone? amirite?

Honestly though I'm not sure, I've heard that "technically" the NPD were not supposed to disclose the numbers in the first place, but have been doing it anyway waiting for a complaint. Someone must have complained.

My REAL guess is that they make more money because more people will have to buy the info from them. Hopefully the internet leaks that info for us curious gamers.

NPD are indeed only catering to the subscribers who foot the bill. Releasing the info publicly for free defeats the object and makes it harder to justify charging for the same info.

As reported on wikia.

On October 10th, 2010 - just days before the NPD report for September would have been released - the video gaming website VG247.com released an interview with an NPD executive stating that, effective immediately, they would no longer release hardware sales numbers in their monthly reports.

Each hardware manufacturer will be responsible for releasing their own numbers, which the NPD will be willing to encourage and fact check, but there is nothing binding requiring them to do so.

     Hardware sales

    * Xbox 360 - 483,989
    * Playstation 3 - 312,000
    * Wii - 254,000
    * NDS - 403,000
    * PSP - Unknown. Reported to be better than August, 2010 but worse than September, 2009.

   Top 10 software sales

   1. Halo Reach (360) - 3.3 million
   2. Madden NFL 11 (360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PSP)
   3. Dead Rising 2 (360, PS3, PC)
   4. NHL 11 (360, PS3)
   5. FIFA 11 (360, PS3, PS2, PSP, NDS)
   6. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP)
   7. Mafia II (360, PS3, PC)
   8. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (PS3, 360, NDS, Wii)
   9. Metroid: Other M (Wii)
  10. Modern Warfare 2 (360, PS3, PC)
