Not Connecting To Server
« on: June 15, 2011, 05:39:00 PM »

I have successfully been using my softmoded xbox with xbmc for the past 3 years with relatively no issues in terms of internet connection. Any ethernet connection provided access and allowed for FTP access. Over the past year, my xbox was in a location where only wireless access was allowed. I attempted to use a crossover cable to internet access through a macbook pro. All that I ever established was the same FTP access to transfer and receive files. I am now in a different location and am attempting to use a wired ethernet connection. I am not able to connect to the xbmc server at all.

On the network settings I have tried different options and currently have DHCP selected. I have been away from the forums for quite sometime and don't remember a lot of this. Please forgive much of my ignorance on this issue.I don't know if I can ftp to the xbox any more. I desperately need some assistance.

Thanks

I assume your using a router.
Start off by finding out the routers ip address.. (possibly 192.168.1.254)
its the ip adress you would enter in to a internet browset to access your routers config page..

If you are on windows you can open a comand line and type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotation marks) it should give you your local ip address for the pc you ran ipconfig on. and your default gateway.
the default gateway should be your routers ip address..

you should generaly use static ip adresses.. so as an example.

router ip address is 192.168.1.254

xbox ip adress set to 192.168.1.xx
pc ip address set to 192.168.1.xx

notice that the 192.168.1 part is the same for all systems. and only the last 3 digits change...
so if the routers ip was, 192.168.0.254
then xbox ip adress would be 192.168.0.xx

remember to replace the "xx" with a unique number for each system on the network..

example
router: 192.168.1.254

pc 1: 192.168.1.1
Default gate way 192.168.1.254

pc 2: 192.168.1.2
Default gate way 192.168.1.254

xbox 1: 192.168.1.3
Default gate way 192.168.1.254

xbox 2: 192.168.1.4
Default gate way 192.168.1.254

if you have a pc that is connecting directly through a modem and dont have a router and you are using a crossover cable to connect to that. then you need to enable ICS. and the default gateway is then the pc's local ip address
local ip addresses start 192.168.

hope that helps.

Thanks Shambles

So I went ahead and did like you said. I ran ipconfig and my router's ip address is 192.168.0.1. subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. I went ahead and changed my network settings to manual and have the following settings:

IP address 192.168.0.20
Netmask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1
dns server 192.168.0.1

I still don't have a connection are there any other settings I need to adjust on the other pages? Or on my routers settings?

shouldnt need too but your router may have set limits on the amount of ip adresses it can use.
with mine i can say 1-253 possible adresses..
so if i set it to 10. only ips ending with 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 or 10 would work.. 11 wouldnt.

also when you change the xbox to manual ip through unleashx you have to set it to manual then restart then setthe ip address.
I generaly set my ip through unleasx then have xbmc use the dashboard ip.

you can check thatthe routers ip address is correct by typing http://192.168.0.1 in to your web browser.
that should take you to your routers config page.
