Help! Xbox Dead After Changing Aspect Ratio!
« on: November 14, 2004, 01:46:00 PM »

I just soft-mod my xbox with Splinter Cell + Memcard. (xbox v1.6), upgraded the harrd drive to a 250G Maxtor, installed Slayer V2.6 from scratch. Every7thing was fine until I changed the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 in Xbox Media Player (OK, now I know it is a very very stupid thing to do....:-(
After the change, the xbox can not be started up any more. After the MS Xbox logo screen, it is hanged there with a messy colorful screen. The hard drive makes some noise and it seems to be reading/writing....but it will hand there forever.
I tried to load up the Splinter Cell again to re-mod...but no luck... the game would not start... I tried FTP...no connection.
I tried switching back the original hard drive. It did not help.. same symptom. I had thought the change of ratio will be saved somewhere on the hard drive. But now apparently it is saved somewhere to the hardware of the box (some flashable memory?)...

Anyone had the same problem and knows how to rescue it? I am thinking about borrowing a wide screen TV and see if it will make the display normal and then I can change it back.....

Well, you shouldn't have been using XBMP, especially when it doens't support 1.6 eeproms and XBMC is better anyways. It's possible that XBMP could have corrupted your eeprom, but I might be wrong, since it's still booting up.

If you have  a backup of your eeprom (as all modders should, especially softmodders), then load up XboxHDM and restore the MS dashboard and see if that makes a difference. I don't think whether or not you have a widescreen would stop the Xbox from booting up.

And if you don't have a widescreen TV, why were you switching to widescreen mode? blink.gif

I wonder why the hell I changed it to 16:9, too.... :-(
I think I was just too excited after modding the box, upgrading the hdd and installing all the applications... I was trying here and there but did not realize there are so many lethal traps there...

I tried to make a new hdd with the backup of my eeprom and C, E using xboxHDM. But it is the same. I guess the eeprom was messed up indeed.
Do you know how to flash the eeprom anbd restore it with my backup?
Or maybe I should ask this at some other board?

He already told you about Xboxhdm its available in the xbox-scene tools section.
U'd be a real dumbass if u cant use it. It's saved my xbox more than twice.
Also more info is available in the softmodding forum.

you'd be a real dumbass if you did not realize I have done xboxhdm restore many times and it did not help.
I used xboxhdm to make my large hdd at the first place. I have tried restoring the hdd with xboxhdm and I even prepared a new brand new hdd with the CD but none of them help.
my question is how to flash the eeprom. it has nothing to do with the hard drive. xboxhdm saving your ass twice does not mean it can solve every problem.

zerouseven,

you should have backup your eeprom before you mod or upgrade your xbox hdd. so if you have used xboxhdm to prepare the hdd make tool CD, it should be under E drive of the disc.
if you did not back up the eeprom, you probably have real trouble to recover it.
if you experienced the exact same problem as mine, I can tell you the xboxhdm will not help you. I have tried it. it is not about the hard drive.
somebody suggest me find out how to flash the eeprom and recover it back to original status. I think that might be a cure.

ive experiance a similar problem (except i fucked myself in the ass majorly with this one..... I accidently FORMATTED MY FUCKING DRIVE... lol
good thing im paranoid and have a draw full of backups from xboxs ive modded + my own.
In XboxHDM you unlock the HDD with the eeprom (unlock -a)
the you run Xboxhd and choose option 1, then select yes to do C E and F format and copy the files u put on the disk in the respective folders.
dont forget to lock it then run it lol
also
Have you tried using ur original HDD, i keep my original clean around also just incase

groovyg,

I have done all those. I tried putting back the original hdd but bo luck. I got a brand new hdd and prepare it with xboxhdm (dumped my backups in the respective folders) then put it in the box, same symptom....
that's why I came to believe it is the eeprom that was messed up somehow.
it has nothing to do with the hdd now.

Well, I know your feeling incredibly bad right now. How should I know? Because I did the same thing about three months ago. I was playing around with that cursed XBMP and changed the aspect ratio... then bOOm, good bye xbox. Like yourself, I soft modded my xbox with the SC game save modification. Like yourself, I too have a Ver-1.6 or had, I should say, hehe. Here is what went wrong & and a few other tidbits : Trust me on this.

1. The Version 1.6 eeprom was corrupted. As soon as you changed the aspect ratio, your xbox rebooted, only for you too see about half of your screen filled with seemingly multicolored lines ( at the top of the screen )

2. It has nothing to do with the Xbox HD, so forget about it. Save your self the stress and time and totally forget about the stock xbox hard-drive for the moment.

Two options are available to you

A. Purchase a new xbox
B. Mod your xbox with a mod chip.

Here, I'll go into option B in detail
-If you modded your xbox with a mod chip, you'll be able to use a standard ISO9660 CD ROM containing a program called "Enigmah's Video Selector" This nifty little program allows you to change the video settings stored within' the EEPROM ( which is the root of your problem )to either PAL or NTSC, by the press of a button.

-exception " Why can't I do this now? " or " Is there anyway to do this without hard modding my box? "
-Your booting process consist's of this
Xbox logo and animation ( flubber )Cool, all is well with that.
Directly following the animation, your greeted with the odd looking lines at the
         top of the screen. PROBLEM.

Well, you see, That's why a "hard" modded xbox is required in this instance. The said method of repairing your xbox requires that you have a "hard" modded xbox, so that your mod chip will recognize the ISO9660 CD-ROM and boot it, thus giving you a chance to REPAIR YOUR EEPROM BACK TO YOUR ORIGINAL STATE. All you have to do is press a button ( A for ntsc or B for Pal, I may be wrong in regards to which button does what, but you can find that information in the readme or .nfo )

I posted some screen shots on the boards here a few months ago regarding this topic. In these screen shots, one could see exactly what you've described here. Also, about a nice 5th of the post's in that thread suggested that my xbox suffered from EEPROM curruption.
My fate is as bad as yours, my friend. However, I think mines is worse, for I was planning a mmorpg project for the xbox and my last dime went toward purchasing that damned piece of equipment.

closing remarks:
I'm glad to see you backed up your data, though. Very smart move. This was something I did not do, but wish I had. For if I did, I could be using and or have access to the contents of my hard drive ( *cries* Halo and the entire street fighter series, damn )

If you have any questions regarding your problem or if I stated something that was not so clear, please PM, I'd be more than willing to help you.

Also, a quick edit here:

FTP'ing to your xbox's hard-drive to execute Enigmah's manually.
Various people on boards has had this method work for them, however, this is only possible if you hard-modded your xbox.

« Reply #14 on: November 18, 2004, 01:06:00 AM »

thank you very much! That's exactly the information I need.
it seems chip-mod is the only option for me now. damn... I had just figured out how to soft-mod the box and get myself ready to enjoy the modded box....then all of sudden, I have to start to explore how to do chip-mod....

I think the only reason I need to do chip-mod is just to provide myself a chance to detour the MS original BIOS and boot up the machine from my modded BIOS. After that, I can flash the EEPROM from the CD I used to boot up the box and write back the original contents (which I have backup).
Is this understanding right?

Is there any particular requirement about what modchip to use? I just want to avoid the soldering work. I had once inspected the area and the dots that need to be soldered.... I am not confident enough to solder that kind of tiny connector myself.... :-(
