When connecting your XBOX to your computer is there a difference if you are using XP Home vs XP Professional?  Reason I am asking I can connect to my computer running XP Professional but not to my computer running XP Home.

They are essentially  the same. Look at firewalls and other things that could be blocking access.

I wasn't able to find anything different in my firewall between the two computers.  It is weird that I can not connect.

Hi,

can you ping the xbox from the xp home computer? What kind of connection are you trying? Ftp or Smb?

Smb is different between XP home and XP professional.

regards.

Hi,

so if I understand you right, you have a shared folder on your xp computer that you are trying to access with your xbox. What dashboard are you using on your xbox?

regards.

Hi,

XP home uses a simplified SMB sharing protocol. Once you set a folder for sharing, every pc on the network can access that folder. In XP professional, I believe this is called easy sharing.

The normal SMB sharing does a check on username and password. You can give specific rights to every user. (For instance read only.)

So, you might try to find the differences between the 2 to pinpoint to your problem. Maybe you have to leave the User field blank or something.

regards.

Can you see the shares on the Home box? If not, then it shouldn't be a permissions issue...

I've actually been having the exact same problem with a friend's Home box. Can't work it out. The systems ping quite happily, the home box just refuses to give share access.

Check the Exceptions tab under your Windows Firewall (located in the Control Panel). Make sure File Sharing is ticked.

Bring up the Properties sheet for the NIC the other systems are trying to connect through. Make sure it has the File Sharing service.

Does that mean it can see the computer name and/or the shares?

So the permission settings are irrelevant and the physical wiring/IP address scheme is correct.

Doesn't leave much, does it?

What accounts are on your system? Do you have a Guest account? Is it active?

I read in a different post to set up a guest account, so I did and it is active.  Both ways it didn't work.
