I would get a 7200 rpm drive at least with 8mb cache that is what the xbox uses any cache over this size will be useless but will still work you need to be able to connect an IDE cable to it and a drive that can be locked and unlocked will allow you to use xbox live still. You can check out wheteher or not your drive can be locked in the pinned section in hardwarre/technical forum

it would work just fine. 8mb is recommended, and 8mb+ cache is preferred. yes, it makes a difference having more cache. and
YES
, having over 8mb cache will work fine, if not better, and the xbox
WILL
utilize the extra cache.

Yes, you will have to use xboxhdm to prepare
the new drive for a softmod.
For a Chipped Xbox, you can use an install CD
that will do the same thing.
