In Car Xbmp Playing Issues
« on: July 26, 2003, 07:28:00 PM »

hi guys
i have my xbox installed in my car.  just finished the install today.  it's great to have 120 gigs of space for mp3's and movies.  my problem is that skipping to next song seems quite complicated, it requires to press at least 2 buttons.  can it be setup so that i can just move the joystick forward to go to next song?  same thing with fast-forwarding...
or is there a good alternative to xbmp?
please help me guys...
thanks

Ive had my xBox in my trunk for quite awhile now..  :)

Just a suggestion.. I install one of the two or you can install both controller ports in you dash.  Just get them out of an old xbox or order them... like ebay.. Then make extentions to connect to your box..
Then you can plug the IR receiver in and use the remote and also if you want, plug two joypads in and play a game..
I also installed a on/off switch so i didnt have to use the controller to turn it off.. i have little push
button switches but im about to install the xbox's LED switch so it lights up and blinks.. now that XBMP can uses BLINK..

BTW Never play any xbox game while driving.. The sterring wheel gets in the way..  ;)

controlling evox with remote  as i type.

shit! accidently shut off the xbox.

note to self: allocate more memory to each process when multi-tasking.

Well im not sure if you could get the ir thingy to work plug in to the controller (mem slot) might work... that would be nice to mount the ir receiver where the X is on the controller.. as for the power inverter.. 2 suggestions

1. Im running a 300 watt that i go from work it was like $40.. and it has two jacks on it, so i can plug other stuff in.. Also on some cars the sig lighter is cut off when you turn the key off.. My Stang does not do this it always on..

2. Im looking into a 12v power supply off a laptop.. sence the xbox is also running 12v from its own convertor.. no need to go from 12v to 110v back to 12v..

And yes you can control the evox with the remote the FF bottons << and >> will scroll the evox menus with out the normal down, down, down to get to other menu items..  As for XBMP the remote will let you skip, FF, Pause, Stop,..ect it will do it all.. also if you wanting to go to a specific part of the movie or song, like there is this one song that only gets good after 1.40min just use the num pad and type it in.. or movie your fav parts at 33.40min do the same thing..
I believe the XBMP manual documents this..

BTW GET A REMOTE YOU WILL LOVE IT..

I'm in the process of putting the Xbox in my trunk this week.
How are you guys turning your Xbox on and off?
XIR Remote mod?
I'm thinking of doing the wireless doorbell mod, but it doesn't look too easy.

I purchased a Trip-Lite PV500 for my power inverter and will have the DVD remote IR eye extened to my dash from the trunk.

I'm planning to use the DVD remote for most functions except IGR. Haven't figured how to do that with the remote yet.

Snyper - how did you install an on/off switch? Was it difficult?

Also, how are you getting the sound from the Xbox to your car's system? FM modulator or rca?

thanks snyper, that's very useful, i printed out the commands...
I'm gonna order one of those 3rd party xbox remotes and they also come with controller extention cords so i can wire the IR receiver at the front somewhere.  do you think the 3rd xbox remote will work fine?  it looks almost identical to xbox remote.  snyper, can you run yr xbox while yr car is turned off?  does it get enough power from yr battery?  cuz my xbox truns on for like 2 seconds and the inverter is beeping like crazy and then it turns off. i can only run it when car is on...  but i just picked up 400watt inverter, hoefully this one will work better.

another in car issue:  dont you find it anoying when u're listenning to music on xbox, then u turn off yr car and when u come back, u have to set everything up again, like run xbmp, find the song... is there a feature in xbmp that will just remember which song it was playing so that when you run it next time, it just starts playing that song again.  software wise this should be pretty trivial.  i'm actually thinking of taking the xbmp source and writting an in-car version of it but i've never done xbox programming.

autocrat, i just put a switch on my controller, that's good enough for me to turn xbox on/off.  this mod is extremely easy and doesnt take more than 30 minutes if u do it for the first time.  at least i dont have to go to the trunk.

pr0digy1 - Do you have the instructions for that mod? It sounds interesting.

BTW, I was told some non M$ DVD remotes may have problems with XBMP. I went out and bought the MS one just to be sure.

hey guys! just thought I'd chime in to say my xbox is going in my car today. I'm working on the doorbell on/off swtich integrated into a wireless controller... I'll let you all know how that works out. as for power i'm just using a inverter however, I have an opus 150w DC-->DC PS coming. I've already converted my xbox power conector to standard ATX via Bunnies' plans.

this is the DC to DC unit that all the carputer guys have been relying on... check out all the specs @ www.opussolutions.com

it's got tons of neat features that are a must for in car computers... I'll start to document all of this if there is interest, so all can benefit!

Infuscomus - how much is the Opus DC-DC box?

Do you have a link about changing the power to ATX?

Thanks

Autocrat---- the opus isn't a cheap item... mine was around $170 US... and I'm still not 100% sure of how it will work, although all needles point to "very well"! But if it does, it's well worth the money... check out their site and read about it.

on making the cable, check out this thread:

http://forums.xbox-s.....pc power&st=0

and last but not least... get bunnies' book (shame if you don't have it  smile.gif  )... it's pretty much step-by-step and easy to follow
