Xbox Media Center Extender
« on: May 25, 2006, 12:31:00 PM »

First of all I wanted to say Hi and thanks to everybody in the forums. I modded my xbox successfully a year and a half ago and I'm very happy with it. This forum and everybody involved helped me enjoy my xbox to the fullest. I have a new goal now. I have a Media center pc and I would like to use the pvr features to be able to watch it in my living room through the help of my xbox.  Do I need to purchase the Xbox media center extender or is there some kind of software or plug in that I could use to do this. Like I said the xbox is modded with an xecuter chip, 120g hd and running xboxmediacenter. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

No you don't need to purchase anything else, just share the videos that are stored on your media center PC.  Just enable file sharing, and then in XBMC browse to that computer and look/play the video files that are shared. (streaming over the network, as long as both are connected to your home network).

Good luck.

I can do that right now. What I wanted to do is be able is to use it as a gateway to my media center pc to watch and pause live tv like a tivo. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the xbox media center extender does that exactly, it allows you to use your xbox to control and transmit the media center pc content to the tv. Basically like if you had the pc right next to the tv.

Oh ok I mis read that then - to be honest I dont know if it does or not.  And if your pc is next to the tv then why use an xbox to control the pc, and why not just get a remote for your pc? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

You might be able to do something like that with the mythtv frontend, but it requires you to have linux on your PC and xbox. Research mythtv if you want to continue since I don't really know that much about it.

MCE extneder does do that but you need to be connected to xbox live and to have a membership.

I run this myself, all you need is the ME software, pop it in the drive of the Xbox and assuming you have a remote for the Xbox (DVD or ME) you're good to go

To be honest mate I just use it for viewing recordings and watching Freeview PPV football (Setanta) from the MC pc as I have Sky+ downstairs and no Freeview box. The GUI is more or less the same as the PC but nowhere near as in depth as XBMC.

I think it does support widescreen but don't quote me on it
