What are you trying to do?

Control what's playing within XBMC?
Access your files via FTP?

?

yep, gives a clue what you want to do? (does that rhyme?)

You will need things like static IP addresses on the internet, routes in through your internet connection etc.

for ftp'ing you probably need to forward port 80 in your router to you xbox's ip address.

also,, can you forward port 135 to your xbox and set someone up across town to have smb access to your computer or xbox?

ftp is port 21
http is port 80

If you forward those two ports from your router to your xbox you should be sailing..

Remember to set a non trivial password for ftp access or you will soon have a hacked xbox.

Yeah, you need to forward the correct ports to your xbox's IP address in your router's settings.

If you want to be able to use the remote control feature via your web browser (HTTP), then use port 80. If you want to be able to access your xbox via FTP, then use port 21.
If you want to be able to use both of these features remotely, then just forward each port separately.

I don't know what type of router you have, but this is pretty much what it should look like on any D-LINK router. I'm sure others aren't too different.

In that picture, I used the IP address of 192.168.0.102, because that is the local IP address of my xbox, so just use whatever your xbox's IP address is.

So basically, what you are doing, is forwarding or transfering any incomming traffic on either port 80 or 21 via TCP to your xbox's IP address at that same port.

I hope that helped you a little,
-Danny

I'm a little confused on how this works.....
...I forwarded port 80....and had a buddy put my IP in his browser....he got the XBMC web server screen.

But let's say I have 2 Xbox's on.......they're both in XBMC.....which will work? How is this decided?

This question also applies to FTP'ing...I'm curious.

Do a port mapping on router so that public port 81 for example maps to port 80 on the second XBOXs IP address and then to access remotely use http://IPaddress:81

I think this is what a netgear port forwarding section looks like...

user posted image

Just name it like xbox http or whatever...
The start port is whatever port you want to have to enter from other computers, and the end port should be 80, or whatever port you have XBMC to use as your webserver.
The IP Address should be the ip address of your xbox.

If you want to do this for two xbox's do as NickLe says... Do the exact same thing, only make the second one goto the other xbox's IP address and for the public port or the 'Start Port', use any unused port, like port 81 or something.

Hope that helps,
-Danny

Another useful website that I use for my computer's FTP server is NO-IP.  Basically you run this program on your computer and it stores your dynamic IP address on a server.  You create your own username and bounce off of another server.  So, instead of typing 66.67.215.256 or whatever, you type *.bounceme.net.  I think it's really useful.

Sweet! I just hooked myself up with a couple of those, it works pretty well. Thanks for letting us in on that, lol
