After changing modchips with the Aladdin out of mine and it still not working I now find that with a bad eeprom and the Aladdin modchip the power button must be pressed in for about 5 secs for cromwell to boot. Cromwell 2.40 (from xbins) does work on 1.6/1.6b as that's what everyone in this thread has been using.
