as long as you use a good quality cable, you can go over 3 feet. I use an HP cable that is four feet.

im using a 6 foot 6 dollar cable works fine

Beware... you do not want a Laplink cable (it is NOT the same as a straight-through parallel cable - some wires are crossed).

I have some 6-foot cables which will work for an X2 programmer, guaranteed, here
