This is foreign territory for me, seeing as how I mostly mod 360's. I had someone (a long time ago) soft-mod an original xbox for me. Now the xbox won't turn on. I checked the error code and it's too much work to fix. What I want to do is take the 1TB hard-drive out and use it as storage on my PC. I've heard though that these hard-drives are locked and you need to do something special to even get windows to recognize it. Can I just do a low level format on this HDD? Is there a linux live distro I can boot off of to unlock it? What are my options here?

depends a lot on how it was modded.
if you were chipped then possibly isnt locked at all.
if its a softmod then hopefully

will work as a master password.. you would need to use a program like atapwd to do that..

there maybe other options like a serial programer through telenet.
or a firmware flash from drive mfr..
or extract the eeprom.bin from the chip "or hopefully just use the backup eeprom.bin you have saved"
but never having tried to unlock a non stock hard disk without the eeprom i wouldnt know..

i can do all the stock drives without a eeprom. but i never tried anything els as i have never needed too..

Thanx for responding. I got the Terabyte drive unlocked using the XBOXSCENE pass. I'm using it as extra storage on my PC.
