If you have a mod chip installed, your HD may not be locked.

I would back up the eeprom to the HD and then try to use a memory card or USB to get it to the computer.

You can try to remove the drive and connect it to see if it is unlocked.

There are programs like Slayer's that will unlock the HD, but once unlocked and removed from the Xbox, you can't lock it back with just the Xbox, unless you have a mod chip or TSOP flash.

Why can't you FTP? Have you looked at the lights on the back of the Xbox to see if they light up? Has your network changed? Are you using a static address on the Xbox? Try automatic.

Try a crossover cable from the Xbox directly to the laptop.
