It's been a couple years since I swapped a larger hdd in with a softmod, but is it possible that you used the option that builds an xbox hard drive from scratch? You could always just use the exploit and reinstall the softmod again on the new drive if it only has the stock dashboard on it.

I did build the drivevfrom scratch yes,

I've attempted to run ndure on.the new drive for some reason when I am in the ndure menu for that drive I'm unable to execute any files.

Have also attempted frostys and hexen discs which told me disc not recognised

When you say you're in the ndure menu you can't run any files, are you in a file manager? I thought you said all you can get is the regular dashboard? Or are you just seeing the files in the game saves section of the stock dashboard?

Or did you mean you can get the exploit to start up but it can't install?

If I run xboxhdm2.2 I can get xbrowser to work in the ndure menu, when I get into the ASCII file manager I can move between folders but cannot run the ndure script, hitting enter does nothing

When I boot up with the drive in the Xbox all I get is the ms dash

And you are hotswapping the new drive from the xbox to the pc to unlock it when you try to run the softmod again, right? Not sure if you would be able to view the files at all if it was locked, but just making sure.

If all else fails, since you can get the MS dash to load up like normal, you could always buy a xbox-to-female usb adapter for cheap on ebay and try one of the other exploits with Splinter Cell, 007, or Mech Assault.

Xboxhdm2.2 can directly lock and unlock without hot swap if you have the EEPROM,

I presumes there would be issues using two different soft mods in the same drive which is why I've not tries the SC exploit?

I just softmodded a box that I got from a thrift store the other day with the Splinter Cell exploit, turns out it had been softmodded before and gave me some problems because there were modded files on the hard drive and Softmod Installer Deluxe didn't want to make a backup because of it and without a MS Dash backup it wont run the installer. However, since I was still able to load the exploit, I could connect via FTP and fix things so I could get it softmodded correctly. I would give it a try if you really feel stuck.  Using that should be able to fix your problem, or at least get you to a point where it's easier to fix the problem.

Also when you get it sorted out, if you have an Xbox that can be TSOP flashed - do it. I had 3 softmodded boxes for the longest time and then I finally decided to flash one of them. Best thing I ever did, you can just plug in a new hard drive and rebuild it with Auto Installer Deluxe DVD. No hot swapping or getting a drive that can be locked or anything, it just works. I've since flashed all of mine that support it. If you're worried about soldering, just buy some conductive paint online and one of the really small paint brushes for model building. You can basically put two paint blots on the board and that's all you have to do.

I've now tried both xboxhdm 2.1 & 2.2, and ran ndure at least 8 different times each following a different tutorial and i'm now just stock on a black screen after the flubber (i get the xbox logo for a few seconds if i hit the eject button), hexen/frostys are not initiating a response.

for some reason while in slax my cpu temp seems to just escalate upto 100 and then takes a few hours to cool down so i have limited time to test versions, i've been using the misses' pc sporadically but don't have a lot of access time with that.

could anyone please advise on what could be going on?

you should try to get hexen to boot "heimdalls xbox engeneering disk"

when thats booted copy the contents of
d:\stock files\C
to C:
"you may want to delete everything from C 1st.. "

do not restart your xbox during this process

when you have the new C files on c go to one click softmod install and i usually reccomend krazies ndure 1.1.1 (sc) exploit

follow all on screen instructions untill its done..

One way to make the hexen disk boot when you are not softmodded is to start a game save exploit and then chose "boot recovery dvd" from the options available.

This is an option available with ndure 1.1.1 SC exploit,
But it may only be an option with the game saves it creats after installing the softmod..
these game saves will be available on the hexen dvd too..

Id try to boot hexen without any special tricks 1st..
but if you cant then id use a ganme save exploit to boot the recovery disk,

the blak screen issue could be due to a soft mod on a hard mod.. "but then hexen should boot, although it will take up to 2 mins to load"

it could also be a slow/dying hard disk that takes a while to boot properly.

Also EEProm conflicts can cause it. so yo may want to check that there are no copys of eeprom files on the hard disk.

what id do if i was having issues with xboxhdm is id 1st put the drive in my pc.
unlock it.
format it using windows.

download "Autobuilder"

(its just a pre made xboxhdm in many ways)

put your eeprom file in the correct folder.

and then tell autobuilder what type of install you want to do.

then it will make your iso for you..
and the rest is the same as you have been doing..

This should do 2 things..
1. make sure you dont have any rogue eeprom files on the hard disk causing black screen.
2. guarantee that you have softmod files on there (they will now be sid based though. so you may want to update with hexen after.

that should eliminate most of the variables..

don't seem able to edit the above, but just to mention. I don't have access to a machine with 2 IDE ports so would require a USB bootable solution.

well you can still use auto builder to create your C and E folders for your xboxhdm 2.x usb loader..

you should start auto builder and tell it what sort of install you want and it will then go ahead and populate the folders for you. Not sure if it will make the iso automatically (probably will) But you can then open the iso using magic iso or alcohol or demon tools and so on..
this will let you see the folders on the iso..

you can then take The C and E folders from that iso and use that on your xboxhdm 2.2

the importaint thing is to start with a fromated hard disk "i think"
as this will make sure there is no cache issues and no rogue eeprom files..

if you decide to just use the stock C and E drives from hexen, then its the same process.
but you wont be softmodded when your finished it will be a stock hard drive again but it will have save game exploits on there, although they will be recovery exploits.. They can still be used to modify the console later usoing splinter cell combined with a recovery dvd like hexen..
