Constantly Dying Ics Chip.
« on: June 11, 2012, 06:19:00 AM »

ok got xbox in the post with no network issues..
had a look at the port looked fine so i removed the ics chip and replaced it..
network came back did some FTP and in about 40 mins there was no network again..

I have a few ics chips i can replace it with. but these little buggers are a pain to solder and i dont want to waste a nother one..
any 1 know of a reason why the box would kill ics chips so i can fix that 1st?

oh yeah its a 1.6a

ok scratch that,
i unsolderd the ics did more cleaning up used a bit of flux paste, re-aligned it and then re solderd all those frging legs down individualy "again" and then i went over them a second time to make sure..

and the network and ftp were back..

im asuming one or more of the legs were bearly solderd to the pad, any way the ics chip was not fried.. so the board is not frying them. the 1st ics was probably fried from something happening to the port although diont ask me what..

an additional note to self would be..
I should get some thinner tips for my variable soldering iron..
Although i have no idea where to find any and im prety sure i already have the thinnest available.

Try solder paste and bake the motherboard.
I'm being serious. I only recently started using paste and it's awesome. smile.gif
