Dead Ethernet?
« Reply #75 on: October 28, 2006, 09:04:00 AM »

First of all I would also like to publicly thank Perplexer for the fine job he did fixing my Pawn Shop special Xbox nic.

Now I have a question for the group.

What are the symptoms of impending nic death?

My original Xbox which has always worked just fine up till now...

...I can browse my network just fine...everything seems to work...but then if I play a video, sometimes it will play for a few minutes...sometimes a few seconds...then it locks...(using XBMC)

...after a period of time the username/password prompt comes up...no matter what I put in, it continues to prompt...sometimes I can cancel out of it and I get the listing of files...sometimes it gets stuck in this mode.

If I reboot, I get the same thing again...

I thought perhaps it was the network, or cable or something...so I completely swapped my repaired xbox for this one...the repaired one works perfectly plugged into this ones cables.

So either the NIC is overheating and dying...or XBMC has some faults. (all of a sudden).

Before I wipe the drive and reinstall OR pull the mobo and ship it to Perplexer...I would like some opinions.

...last comments...it seems to have gotten a bit flakey on the network for the past few months...here and there, occasional things...now it is constant...so you can tell what I think the problem is...

I had asked Steve (Perplexer) to fix my xbox. He fixed it the day he received it and had it back in the mail the next day. Great job! Highly recommended!

Would like to take the opportunity to thank Perplexer for fast service.

Ordered a ICS from him, got delivered within a week to Sweden.

Had a xbox with no nic light, changed the curcuit so now the network are functional again.

Highly recommended, thanks for the service will not hesitate to contact you again if I need more ICS.

Hey all,

I'm wondering if I'm experiencing the dead nic issue as well.  I don't seem to have a network activity LED on my xbox, at least not that I can find.  I believe it is a 1.1, but not 100% on that.

I took my xbox over to my gf's place this past weekend, and we transferred an episode of CSI to it to watch on her TV.  I had it sitting in my car for a couple hours in the cold - don't know if this would have had an effect on it.  When it was plugged into her router, the IP address was 192.168.0.5, and when it was last plugged into my router, the IP address was 192.168.0.100.

I brought the xbox back home to watch some shows on it, plugged it in, and no IP address appears.  HOWEVER, when I go to System -> Settings -> Network, the IP address of 192.168.0.100 appears.  Next to "Current IP", it says "No Link".

If someone could shed some light on whats wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.  Pretty sure its not the router as it was working on Wednesday and I tried a couple ports.  Its not the cable b/c I tested that with the computer.  I've tried power cycling the router and the xbox, even unplugging it from the wall.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Weeple2000

QUOTE(Perplexer @ Sep 14 2006, 08:38 PM) *

Yes, not too hard if you are OK with a soldering iron... removing the old part without damaging the motherboard pads is probably the trickiest part.

I sell chips for $8/ ea including worldwide shipping.  Repairs are $30 plus return shipping.  PM if interested!

Hey Perplexer,

Two questions for you please:
  1. Will the motherboard/xbox continue to work if this chip is removed and not put back? Mine is currently working fine (just no network) and if I mess up removing the dead chip, will the xbox atleast continue running?
  2. Do you still sell these chips with worldwide shipping?

Thanks

Highly recommend Perplexer as NIC repairer.  I sent him my ethernet impaired XBOX on May 25 - he repaired, tested, and sent it back in the same day.  The XBOX arrived on May 31 - professionally packed and running like a charm.  I'm a happy customer!!!   biggrin.gif

Thanks to the USPS and their recent package reclassification, I've had to raise my rates.  (I send chips out in a rigid mailer, which used to be considered an envelope, but now is called a parcel, hence considerably more expensive to ship.)  grr.gif

ICS PHY: $10/ea including worldwide shipping (cheaper if ordering more than one)
Full NIC repair and testing: $30 plus actual return shipping ($9 for motherboard, $16 if whole Xbox, USA)

Cheers,
Plex

Just a quick plug for our boy Perplexer.

He received my two boxes with dead ethernet on day 1.  Had them both back in my hands on day 3.  Not only did he fix the NICs, he even re-soldered some of my sloppy work on my mod chips.

This guy is the real deal.  He will cure what ails ya.

I'm just bumping this because I had to search for this post for another forum member.  Perplexer is quite rad, from what everyone says.

I just got a chip from perplexer and tried the repair myself.  I felt confident that everything went well, but I still have a dead ethernet port.

I would recommend sending it to perplexer and I would consider my soldering skills pretty good.  I think I'm going to just get another one and keep this one around for parts now.

A lightning storm fried my xbox's NIC a couple weeks back, along with a bunch of other stuff.  mad.gif  I'll be needing your nic repair services. Sent PM.
