Dead Ethernet?

kRoNoUs:
First of all, I did not say that the eeprom corruption caused the ehernet to die.
The 1893AF ic was broken. The thing was that after changing this ic, the mac address changed each time I rebooted ore launched another dash. This made the DHCP server to give the xbox a new IP each time it changed mac. I have limited the IP range of DHCP, so when the range was all used it got 0.0.0.0. BUT if I used static ip on the box everything was OK (mac still changed thouch).
NOW after restoring a backup of the eeprom the mac address did not change anymore and i switched back to DHCP.
Seems like a good idea to take a eeprom backup for each new moded box:)

itbejared:
Your problem accessing the G drive in another box CAN BE because of the bios version. you need to use xxxx.67.  if the bios version is xxxx.06 it only supports F drive. I read something saying if you use the wrong bios you can corrupt your data but i think that was with ore without LBA48.
You can put the HDD in you pc to retrive your data. There has been made some softwares that can read the fatx filesystem.

Hope this helps:)

My Ethernet port just recently stopped working.  I've been looking around and I was thinking, if I take off the ICS chip from my friend's Xbox and use it on mine, will it affect his other than not being able to use LAN?

If you don't have the right tool to takeout the ICS chip, it's just better to swap the motherboard with friend's xbox.

The best way to take of the chip is to use hot air. only thing is to be careful with the air flow. To much wil blow of the suronding components.

I use a bosh heat gun, normally used for heat shrinks and stuff. now this is a bit overkill for this cind of work but its cheaper than somehing made for this purpose.
Youll need one which can regulate temperature and air flow. do not use more then 400 celcius then you can fry the board. Also try to heat up slowly use yout time the components and board can stand a lot of heat over a log period of time. Not more the 400 celsius!!  Try it out on a old mainboard ore some smd card which is allready trash. it's not as hard as you might think.

Second method is to solder up one side with A LOT of solder, so you can heat up all the legs at the same time. Now you use a small screwdriver ore some tweeser to gently lift the side of the component. Lift it about a mm ore so. Then let the solder cool down while holding the screewdriwer ore tweesers in place.
Use a solder sucking device ore solder sucking band to remove the solder.
Then one side is clear. Do the same on the other side. now you dont need to cool down just remove the IC.  This is methot is the most dangerous one. You can easyli rip one ore more of the pads of the board, and then you might be in trouble.

I suggest to use hot air. that is the pro way:)

REVIEW OF REPAIRED DEAD ETHERNET

Well about a month ago, my ethernet just stopped working.  I plug in a cable, no light, no response.  Tried router, tried direct connection, changed settings, static, automatic.. NOTHING WORKED!  I was so pissed.  Now what??  I have to burn everything on CD's to transfer anything to my Xbox?

But wait!  I asked around and was sent to Perplexer.  He took the time to explain everything in English, not mumbo-jumbo, about what had happened.  We concluded that the ICS and possibly the NIC port was damaged due to static electricity.  I have a cat in my appartment, and everytime I go to pet him, I get a shock.  I assume with all the cat hair around, I went to plug in my cable, and fried the ICS/NIC port.

So now what??!  Now I'm screwed right?  I just spent $350 CDN modding this damn Xbox and now it's useless to me??  Helllllllll no!  For a very VERY fair price, Perplexer offered to fix my Xbox if I shipped him the motherboard.  So here I am, thinking to myself.. so I'm supposed to take my Xbox apart, ship it to some guy in the USA that I don't even know, and expect to get it back??

I took the chance, he emailed me right away when it arrived, and had it fixed that day.  He fixed the ICS chip not once, but twice!  Then, he even replaced my NIC port and went over my LPC rebuild solder spots as there were errors coming up.  Now if that's not incredible service at a great price, I don't know what is!  It took less than a week to get it back to my igloo up here in Canada, and just yesterday I updated my BIOS via the network smile.gif

Thank you very much to Perplexer for offering a complicated service at a very fair price.  I was not about to start soldering 60 points or however many tiny spots there are on the ICS chip.  I emailed him many times because I was so unsure of myself and what was involved, and he was patient and friendly each time.  Perplexer took the time to explain exactly what he was going to do, what risks are involved, and just made me feel like my Xbox was in good hands.  And it was.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR ANY XBOX NEEDS, ESPECIALLY NETWORK ISSUES!

Does anyone know an Online shop that sells this chip?

I have about 4 Xbox's laying around with DEAD NIC's and I used a *really* dead Xbox to repair one of the 4.

So I was thinking it would be handy to have a few laying around since this problem seems to be fairly common.

BTW.. 2 of those 4 xbox's had not even been opened/modded in any way. Poor design is all i can think of.

So far googling has got me no where! Enter a part# and you get all kinds of useless info hehe. Really the only place i have found to FIND this chip is eBay buying broken xbox's and stealing it from them.

Also does anyone know if a STE100P would work as a replacement?

Thanks!!

I will appreciate if anyone knows where I can buy the network controller chip I have been trying to find a place where I don’t have to buy a 100 dollars worth. They costing about $2.28 each I willing to buy a couple or so but not a hundred dollars worth.

Must have had the same luck I have so far.

Lowest MIN purchase i have found is $100 as well.

Anyone run an electronics repair shop that needs to buy something expensive that could tack on 20 or so Chips? wink.gif

It's amazing how hard it is to track down a chip as common as this!

This is a common chip but not that common.
Thats why you cant get them in small amounts.

The producer is icst.com
There you can find a list of dealers around the globe.
What I did was to call my local dealer and asked for a sample.
You need to do this pretending to have a use for the component. Like a development project ore something. If you say its for repairing a box you wont get it.  BTW: when ordering sample you will pay for the transport which in my case was UPS express from US to Norway.. (not cheap at all)

What would be nice is if one of us ordered say 200 chips and sold them trough this board. I could do that but only if I knew that I was able to sell some.

So give me a shout if you're intrested

I am trying to deduce whether my ethernet port is dead or if there is some other issue.  I am using Media Center and which indicates no ip (0.0.0.0).  When I have tried to access files from my PC I get the an error that says I do not have a network connection.  I have ruled out the network cable and my router as the culprit.  When the cable is plugged in, the light next to the port is amber.  When I access the network option in the dashboard, I get the big ugly green error with a number 21 in the corner and the console light blinks red/green which I would think indicates a motherboard problem.  The same error comes up when I access Xbox Live.  The day I discovered this, we had a big thunderstorm, but it had not knocked out power.  However, their must have been a surge of some kind as the router lost two ports (it has now been replaced) and the TV button was blinking rapidly and would not respond until it had been unplugged.  Before that, it was all good and I was happily enjoying watching my avis on the big screen.    sad.gif

It seems pretty reasonable to me that the ethernet port is blown, but the amber light?  I would think if the port was blown, it would not light up at all.

So what's the verdict?

Where did anyone find a minimum purchase of $100? The best I could fiind was $300.
