Flash Drive Question.
« on: March 10, 2011, 06:47:00 PM »

I added a normal USB port to one of my XBOX consoles years ago and have NEVER used it for anything.  I have a handfull of 16 and 32GB flash drives and I was wondering if there is a way to format them to FATx so I can transfer game backups from my PC to the xbox.  If so, what software would be needed to read the FATx flash drive on my PC?

I used the search function for this first with no luck.

Thanks.

No USB flash drive over 4gb will work on the Xbox.

But anything 4GB and below will?
If I were to format a 16GB into 4 seperate 4GB partitions would it work?

Nope. I personally tried that myself with no luck. Also, not all flash drives 4gb and smaller will work. It is a crap shoot finding one that the xbox likes.

I suppose adding a purpose designed USB port to a Xbox is an interesting DIY project giving a minor practical advantage.

However as I understand it the four controller ports are little more than redesigned USB ones. All you need to use them with compatible USB devices is an adapter lead which is still easily found and costs. literally, a few dollars/pounds.

So I'm interested as to what mod to what controllers were you thinking of?

the memory card slots on the controllers are USB ports as well, and like the controller ports you just have to wire it to a standard port

Yes, I know people have done just that, convert the memory card port into a USB one but why? Perhaps I'm being thick but that's what I've never understood and the reason I asked. Is it just being done because you can or does it have some practical purpose you can't acheive in any other, neater way?

As I said cheap, purpose designed Xbox controller port to USB(F) adapter cables have been available for years and still are quite easy to find. So except in extremis  or as part of some larger radical modding project I don't see the point of defacing a controller or console case just to put in a what amounts to a 5th USB port.
