Xbox Remote Dongle Not Working
« on: February 13, 2011, 01:41:00 AM »

In what program are you detecting the key presses from the remote?
If it's Xbmc, maybe you need to enable the remote or add a file to tell it what to do on a remote keypress.

regards.

Hi,

Both machines using XBMC.  The one where the remote is working is build 30750.  The machine where it does work is slightly older.

There seems to be an xml keymap file so not sure why it's not working...

It may have something to do with the way you changed the region and where the original region is. Maybe the original region doesn't support the DVD dongle. Just a thought.

Have you tried it with another dash on that machine?

It should work with the MS or UnleashX dash no matter what region is set. My two official playback kits (bought in a PAL region) works for me on all my Xboxes no matter what region I've changed them too.

If you know they work for other dashes you know that it's a XBMC issue. Solving that is another matter but you need to identify where the problem is first.

It could even be a port problem - has that been checked?  With MS or UnleashX dashes the dongle functions on all ports whether a controller is attached to another one or not.

Edit:-

I've just tried both my dongles/remotes with different machines set to different regions with XMBC and they both worked just as they should.  I even changed regions on the same machine - no difference.

Not a comprehensive test of course but it does suggest thiis problem is not general.

Hi,

Good suggestions and I had a go...

And a very strange thing happened!

Doesn't work at all on the MS dashboard and 'sort of' works on unleashx.  It works for a while then just stops.
During this time, a joypad will work just fine.  Tested all ports, and they're fine with a joypad.

I know it's not the IR itself because as I mentioned earlier, it works fine on another machine.  But I wonder if the region thing has just confused the xbox.

It was a PAL UK machine that I've converted to US NTSC.  So the DVD region is 2.  I've considered maybe I need to get a new IR kit and try that, but I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time.

Thanks again for the suggestion, hopefully it's a bit clearer now...

It sounds more like a hardware problem to me. A sticky or worn button on the remote perhaps. I am also assuming the batteries are fresh and, if you can, that their contacts have been checked.

Have you also rechecked it on the other Xbox since this problem was identified?

I've never heard of a region specific issue with the DVD dongle or remote. I can't think why they'd differ anyway but I've been surprised about Xbox related things less likely so can't rule it out completely.

However if there is such a thing I'm sure somebody here would have heard about it.

My first thought was it must be a hardware issue...

Checked it again on the original xbox the remote was connected to and it still works just fine.

I even programmed my harmony one remote to see if that would make a difference and exactly the same thing happens.

So it looks like the dongle is the problem, but only in the xbox I converted to NTSC.  In the original xbox it all still works absolutely fine.

Very strange, I'm stumped...

Should have asked earlier but have you region changed it back using Enigmah to see whether it (still?) works correctly in PAL mode?

What Xbox version are the non-working and working one? v.1.6 Xboxes seem to have more quirks and it occurs to me something to do with that is just as likely as your region changing theory. Maybe it's even a combination of the two.

Another long shot: are you sure the DVD kit you're using is OEM and not an unsuspected counterfeit? The dongle should have a metal plate on its reverse
detailing several things including its Part No.: X08-25402 and country of origin. My UK bought one was made in Indonesia and has the usual CE Euro compliance symbol alongside two others.

In short: sorry, stumped too. sad.gif

Ah, you might be onto something there...

The old xbox is a 1.4 IIRC, the new one (with the problem) is def. a 1.6.

I will try switching the region back to see if that works, I only switched regions so I could use the HD kit, it doesn't work on PAL machines I believe.

The DVD kit is def. genuine, not some dodgy ebay kit  biggrin.gif

Thanks for the advice...

It will work in PAL mode of course but you'll just get 480i/60Hz or 576i/50Hz when using Component cables, near enough identical PQ to RGB SCART. I've read some TVs can be funny about SD via Component and may require manual menu selection for SD resolutions.

As you say, the HD/progessive scan options are only available in NTSC.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I might have worked out the problem.

I tried all the suggestions and nothing worked.

the only other difference I could see was the skin used on XBMC.  The machine that didn't work had ellipsis and the working xbox had PM3.

I switched the skin from ellipsis to xtv and guess what?  The remote worked again!

I know ellipsis is a bit of a memory hog so maybe it was that all along.  I guess when booting into krayzie extras etc., available memory is still low.

Thanks for the suggestions, helped me work it out in the end.

A XBMC skin problem !!!?

Xbox behaviour can be surprising and this is another example. You just wouldn't have guessed it could be something like that.. Glad you sorted it out.
