Sata Hdd Upgrade
« on: December 30, 2010, 02:29:00 AM »

been doing some reading, and it seems like its been acomplished. what i want to know is...

is there any certain SATA to IDE conveter that works best?

ive got my eye on 500 gig western digital, all the posts ive read have been about 1TB or bigger. will the 500g be easier and more reliable?

also the only real way i have to format the drive is with xboxhdm2.2. i suppose i could use one of my other modded boxes if that is easier, what do you guys recamen?

seems that the PATA/IDE drive is going the way of the dinosaur. i was shopping around today and a 500g PATA was 20$ more than a 500g SATA, and the shelves were almost bare of the PATA. i guess thats supply and demand for you, but i dont make sense to me to charge more for outdated tech.

regarding simplicity and reliability of 1tb vs 500gb, its not the drive that people run into issues with, its the SATA-PATA adapters

xhdm is fine to format C and E, but once you get the drive installed make sure you reformat F with xbpartitioner

the reason 500gb PATA drives cost more is because 500gb is close to the largest PATA drive made (they were 750s and even a few 1tb but 500 was around where they started switching over to SATA) where 500gb is a rather small SATA these days

its kindof like how a high-end Chevy can be cheaper than a low-end Cadillac

so, no advice on the converter then? since PATA is on its way out. we should work on compiling a list of working converters. im going to head to the comp. store today to have a look. right now my only requirement is a plug and play that the board just ataches to the HDD for a nice neat fit into the box. similar to the pics here:

theres a converter listed in the pinned 1tb thread, it seems to be the one most people use (i never did a SATA upgrade so i cant speak firsthand)
