Xbox Failing On Dvd
« on: December 28, 2010, 10:15:00 PM »

Hi guys, got a problem with my trusty old modded xbox (no chip cause the guy who did it ripped me off!) just a simple flash, however its served me faithfully for many years.

Basically now when i turn it on, it can either :

- work fine for awhile and then crash after maybe an hour sometimes 2

- turn on and crash at the loading screen showing the XBOX logo and occasionally the xecuter 2 small logo appears at the bottom.

or what seems to be an increasing likelyhood it goes through the motions until the logo which dissapears and comes up showing the error 11 and the light flashes red and green

So i figured DVD connections, however it all seems to be plugged in ok.

So i guess my dvd rom is well dead or dying.

I know it doesnt like reading discs but then again it is rather ancient now. and It does occasinally start up normally. but will always eventually crash (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I should probably take this as a sign that its time to move on and get a 360!
but i guess i just want to see if theres any life left in it.

Is it possible to run the xbox without a working DVD rom?
I am assuming no. but i thought i would check just in case.

Thanks

The later X2 BIOS types do indeed allow you to run without a DVD attached. Simple way to test if yours does is to unplug the thing and see what happens.

The DVD drive shares an IDE cable with the HDD. It's possible either of the two devices are causing the error. Removing the DVD drive and testing performance would be a good way to confirm that one way or the other.

There's also a chance that the PSU is failing, or the IDE socket on the moterhboad is failing.

Did a full teardown and cleanup including the internals of the DVD Drive and it seems to be more stable now, so thanks again for the advice!

I did however find out it will not run without the DVD drive but ohwell can't have everything smile.gif

You could re-flash the TSOP to one that will run without the DVD drive.

Or, if you are happy, you can leave well enough alone.
