well i figured out how to do it and it was kind of easy.
What i did was i put the hard drive back into the original xbox that it was in.
then i used an auto installer disc to load config magic and unlocked it that way.
once it was unlocked i popped it into a computer and it saw it but i was unable to format it in device manager.
so i put in a windows installation disc and formatted the drive. now it works like a charm on my computer.

i found this way a lot easier than the others on the net and thought i'd share it.
