Xboxhdm 2.2 Cannot Find Eeprom
« on: September 23, 2010, 12:45:00 AM »

xboxhdm 2.2 cannot find eeprom. im having trouble generating hd key

i have gone through all steps up until where i need to "generate HD key" (#6)

i have created my c, e and f partitions just fine. then i go to select #6 (generate HD key (requiers eeprom)). it says:

Can not find eeprom
1. search floppy
2. manually type location
3.exit
(maynot be exact wording)

so i go to #2 to manually type location of eeprom and whatever i type it comes back with ".... folder does not contain eeprom.bin" (again sorry if its the not the exact wording).

examples of what i've typed (note my usb drive says the location is "sdal" not "sdb1" as in the tut):

/mnt/sdal/eeprom (as it says in the examle)
/mnt/sdal/eeprom/eeprom.bin
/media/sdal/eeprom
file:///mnt/live/mnt/sdal
system:/media/sdal/eeprom

etc...

the eeprom is in the eeprom folder in the root of the usb drive. I've checked. it's there. i even tried copying one to the root without the folder.

i tried doing what it said in the tutorial in the help folder by opening a new konsole and typing in "lockhd -a /dev/hda" and it said the drive was frozen. i went back to make sure i could still access the drive and xboxhd worked just fine still.

i remember something about eeprom needing to be all in caps and that mattering some how in the past? this is my first time using the usb style. and its been a while since i last made a xbox hd.

any suggestions?

thanks  biggrin.gif

There are 2 separate issues:
1. Security frozen.
2. Path issue with eeprom.

Let's address part 2 first. Try locking with version 2.1 instead. Filename eeprom.bin should be in lower case. As for part 1, try disabling IDE detection in bios and if that fails, try connecting the IDE cable to the hdd after PC has POST.

thanks for the fast reply

i did as you said. i tried xboxhd 2.1 with same results.

i had to plug in the hdd after POST as you said and that unfroze the security.

still cant get xboxhd to find and implement my eeprom.

now i am using the xboxhd main menu > #6 Generate HD key (eeprom required) to try this. in the TUT in the help folder it says to reach this menu a different way. infact there are several steps in the TUT that i never saw such as:

QUOTE
You will be prompted to enter your mount point.
Type in (for example) '/mnt/sdb1' (without the quote marks).

i was never prompted to do this. i was just able to say "yes" and move on.

when i "Type in (without the quotes) 'lockhd -a /dev/hda' and press return." i dont get the screen as in the TUT. with the
QUOTE
eeprom.bin not found
1. enter a different path manually
2. exit
choose an option [1-2]:

i go straight to this screen:
QUOTE
HDD model: !@*&!^@(*#&^!(@*#&@
HDD key: (*&%^^@)_@!(&#@))@(*_%(&*#
HDD password from eeprom:  ()&!@#^^%*#(#40!_!+!_#)*&#!@
are you sure you want to continue? [y/n]:

then i get a status screen of what the state the drive is in.
QUOTE
security support: YES
Security enabled: no
Locking enabled: no
etc...

i never saw these menus:
(IMG:http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee226/dballs442/xboxhdmenu1.jpg)
(IMG:http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee226/dballs442/xboxhdmenu2.jpg)
though this ^ one is familiar from 1.9.
and the i saw a different but kinda similar menu as the first pic. as well as other menus.

not sure how much this all matters but my usb isnt named BOOTUSB.
my base url is: file:///mnt/live/mnt/sdc1     (or whatever the last 4 characters are each time) seems it has an extra folder or two in the path.

again my problem is i cant generate an HD key using my eeprom. eeprom.bin is not found.

All in lowercase, if I'm not mistaken. That limitation may indeed have been removed for all I know.

maybe I am missing the point here, but why do you need the HDD key?
are you trying to lock the HDD? There are other ways to do that.
I have not seen your error messages before (i.e HDD model: !@*&!^@(*#&^!(@*#&@)
Are you sure your USB stick is built correctly?
IIRC, xboxhdm2.1 used scripts to auto find the eeprom/hdm folders and this will be made known when you 'boot' the konsole.
Unfortunately the tutorial is out of date as you have noticed...it's there as a guide only.

i am soft modding. my box is not hard modded. as in the past i need to create the hdd key. or am i mistaken? this was a step i skipped by accident  in the past once and the hdd did not work on my xbox until i went back unlocked my hard drive and generated an hd key then locked it again.

in the past at this stage i had to press and go through the menus in option #1 then #6 then quit then lock the hard drive:
(IMG:http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee226/dballs442/xboxhdmenu3.jpg)
do i not need to do #6 in 2.1 or 2.2?

as for the:

"HDD KEY: ()!*@#^&*(%&!&((!@*#"

i simply put that as an example instead of the actual #'s perhaps i should have wrote it like this:

"HDD KEY: 10293785yt81578168df24g43"

again that's just for reference to what screen popped up next. however there was a key and "password from eeprom". has the hdd key been generated? am i dont? should i lock and go? i always get scared of locking the drive as i think it will not be able to be unlocked or at least difficult.

and i figured the tut was a bit out of date and just for a guild. again every thing went fine but i cant get the program to find my eeprom.bin before i lock my hdd.

i suppose i could revert to 1.9 that i have used in the past to just get it done. i kinda wanted to figure this out for the sake of learning, trouble shooting for others in the futre, and the ease of using USB instead of messing with discs and cd roms and what not. so would it be fine if i used 1.9 at this stage to finish the job or would that mess anything up? would i have to re create my c drive again and what not?

Option 6 to generate hdd key will never work for versions 2.X, it only worked for versions 1.X for a simple reason - options 1 to 8 as your screenshot all worked under qemu and it makes no sense to port any of the security options over. Only options 1,2 and 5 are working while the other options are ported to the external menu in SLAX itself and automated whenever possible as scullc has explained - fwz did the hard work of figuring out the paths and removing the need for an ISO file in ver 2.X.  I meant to clean all the extraneous options up in version 3.X but never completed the work..

To further clarify, 'Stage 1' refers to the SLAX prompt. 'Stage 2' refers to the old xboxhdm prompt which runs in qemu -(IMG:http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee226/dballs442/xboxhdmenu3.jpg)

Are you running lockhd from the right place? It should be run from Stage 1. I could walk you through the manual steps of what lockhd does behind the scenes with hdtool if necessary:

1. Copy eeprom.bin to /tmp.
2.
CODE

hdtool -e /tmp/eeprom.bin -d /dev/hda -o LOCK

hda or hdb or hdc or hdd depending on the IDE connection of the xbox hdd.

I am not sure why your eeprom is not being picked up.
my eeprom path is thus: /eeprom/eeprom.bin
yours like that?

one thing - how did you get the drive unlocked?

I understand your reluctance in messing with locked drives....i know from painful personal experience. If 1.9 worked before then I'd recommend using it again. xboxhdm2.x is great & useful but is only one way of getting things done...but give ldotsfan locking method a go (i know it works) as you're almost there.

i did as you said in konsole and it said that it couldn't find location /tmp/eeprom.bin. i made the folder and copied the file. are eeproms supposed to be 1k? should it be more? i did this in 2.2. when i tried to boot up my 2.1 usb stick i got this error:

maybe i need to remake my 2.1 usb? it got corrupt somehow? my 2.2 still works fine. but still cant get the drive to lock.

You made the folder? /tmp should be there to begin with  dry.gif It is a folder in / root and not on the usb drive if you know what I mean. Each eeprom.bin file should be exactly 256 bytes in size - how did 1k come about?  sleep.gif . How are you formatting the usb stick? Is that in FAT32 or FAT16?

There was a glitch in earlier versions of 2.2 - it's more of an issue with the usb formatting tool packaged within rather than hdm itself but this was corrected subsequently - RMPrepUSB is the correct usb formatting to be used with hdm 2.2. But having said that, the last user of 2.2 - EvilCorpse only reported success via hotswapping and I'm not entirely certain if this causes issues with hdd locking hence my earlier advice to revert to ver 2.1. The key difference with 2.1 and 2.2 is actually the usb formatting tool. scullc also packaged some documentation on how to lock the hdd with MHDD which is included in the ver 2.2 download.

Please report back on your results.

i dont know what you mean. i look at it as all files are on the usb stick when this is all loaded. i searched the usb for dry.gif with windows search and it didnt find anything. where else would files be or come from when all is loaded from the usb stick?

im not sure what i formatted my stick as (fat 32 or 16) i simply followed the instructions.

heres what im going to do. im going to start again from scratch with 2.1 and give you all my results. smile.gif savy?

ok just did as i said. formated my usb again (fat32 i suppose. using USB-Boot_Utilities) using 2.1 and following these instructions: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=649031.

all the menus from the tut in the "help" folder of 2.2 where there this time. but when i picked to lock the hd it said the directory was not found again!

i was unable to active stage 2 as well.

perhaps my ide cable has had it for my cd rom when plugged in with it also didnt work. ill try a new ide cable in the morning.

ok i used 1.9 and it worked like a charm first time.

however.... i accidentally used the Cdrive from E/backups/Cdrive and not the actual Cdrive files.

soooo, it boots to m$ dash. sad.gif

my questions is can i just run the softmod via splinter cell again on my new 500 gig hd drive? or should i go back and make a new iso and unlock the drive, reformat with proper files then lock drive again? be nice if i could just run the softmod again on the new drive.

Just softmod it with Splinter Cell. Make sure you use XBPartitioner 1.1 to format the F/G partitions once it's softmodded.
