Upgrading The Dvd Drive To A Samsung 616t
« on: August 25, 2010, 01:16:00 PM »

Well, I guess I'm a little too late in attempting this upgrade. I cannot find a Samsung SD-616T for the life of me! I found one listing on ebay that claims to be a model T, but I'm not sure it's for real. There are tons of drives listed as SD-616, without any letter at the end. Is it possible that one of these will work, even if it is not specifically a 616T? I've seen a few reports that the 616E is more or less a no-go. If a Samsung can no longer be had, are there any other drives that can be used to upgrade the read speeds for the original XBOX?

The listing I'm talking about is here.

Item number 220435355340 if the link above doesn't work for some reason.

Maybe someone could take a look at it and verify that the drive at least looks right?

Otherwise, I guess the best I can do is replace it with a new standard drive so that at least it'll open reliably again. *Sigh*

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to answer.

(Note: this is a repost of a topic I put in the hardware/case modding forum on accident. Sorry!)

Liam, that appears to be the correct drive as it looks just like mine. Also, you are on the right track. Go with the Samsung 616T and forget about the LG 8164 or the 8163. The 64 has issues that cannot be replicated from one drive to the next and they cannot be fixed, like an issue backing up certain original xbox games and another reading dual-layer discs, and another not being able to play retail DVD's through DVDX. The 8163 is a better choice over the 8164 but still not a better drive than the Samsung.

In my opinion the Samsung 616T is the best PC DVD-ROM drive (I have owned all 3) for the xbox. It fits better in the xbox case than the LG 8164 (the 64 and 63 are too short) and about equal performance wise to (or slightly better than) the LG 8163.

EDIT: Not to mention, the LG 8164 require an adapter, as the poster above me mentioned, where as the 8163 and the Samsung do not.

Thanks for the responses. I ended up taking a chance on a Samsung on eBay, should get here in a few days. About $24 total. Did you notice if a lot of these drives came out of old eMachines? There is a pretty huge number of eMachines pulls on eBay.

Now I just need to pick a soldering station and start getting some practice, lol. I'm thinking about buying a headphone amp kit or something to learn with.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Soldering is already done but you do pay for it.
