Risks Of Cloning Hdd With Chimp26
« on: July 15, 2010, 08:12:00 AM »

Power for target hdd via a molex Y splitter is preferred. Floating ground of xbox is often cited as one of the risks for hotswapping if external power source is used. Electronics experts please kindly comment.

Power should be supplied to the target hdd before the hotswapping of dvd ide cable to the target hdd during the process. My personal preference is to connect the molex splitter before the xbox is powered on.

Suggest that you backup all important data to reduce the risks and I assume you already have eeprom backup on PC. The risk is more on the target hdd rather than the source hdd though. During my tests for chimp2618, I never removed the source hdd from its enclosure in the xbox casing.

My questions:
1. Why didn't you use the original method you used to upgrade from the stock hdd to the 80Gb?
2. Have you thought about the partitioning of the 160Gb? How did you partition the 80Gb?
3. Which version of chimp do you intend to use?
4. For comparison purposes with other techniques:

Am I supposed to set the drive to slave or master before conecting to xboxhdm? I didnt have it set to anything when I tried it on xbox hdm. But I dont know how to where to put a jumper pin. The 160 GB doesnt have one but I will use one from another drive. Ive searched about that but I just dont understand how to put it.

Set the hdd to master for xboxhdm, i use chimps a lot and never had a problem yet that wasnt caused by me missing a step. I power my xbox with the Y splitter in place already , then disconnect dvd and connect hdd ide and power then launch chimp. If you look on the label of the 160g hdd there will be a diagram showing you where to place the jumper, some even have it printed onto the pcb on the bottom of the hdd right near the jumper pins.

When I connected my 160 GB to pc for xboxhdm the hdd always made some loud clicking noises its a Samsung SP1604N and its lockable.

That usually means the HD is dead or dying.

I cant get Chimps to boot. It comes up with a blue screen and I cant control anything. It just freezes when it says loading kernel. Am I supposed to disconnect IDE from DVD and connect it to the new 160GB hard drive already powered up before launching chimps so that it can work? Ive seen the jumper pin label but I just dont get it? huh.gif I know how to put the pin in, but I dont know where. i want to set it to slave to be able to clone the hdd.

Edit: This is what I found on my hdd.     http://www.samsung.c..._ia_cd=05040000    On the Picture Am I supposed to do the General Pin Settings or Pin Setting (32GB Clip Pin Setting) to set it to slave to clone it with Chimps.

Considering there is only 2 options you can narrow it down by trying each one  uhh.gif
It is the general pin settings so no jumpers required, not sure why it took you so long to work that out ?
