When you say "the hard drive tried to start", are you talking about the actual HDD - the thing inside the console that holds all your data - or the entire console?

What does the LED on the front of the console do? Does it send any video/audio output to the TV?

Unplug the power/IDE cables from the HDD, and turn the console on. What happens?

I can't say I've ever heard of a system acting in this way ("if present, the HDD attempts to spin up, but nothing else happens").

It's possible the power/eject circuit board is at fault, and causes the system to power off as soon as you attempt to turn it on.
