April 2008 Dashboard Update Breaks Backup Playability?
« on: April 24, 2008, 06:10:00 PM »

This is my first post but I'm definitely not new to the scene.  So I'm surprised no one has mentioned the new firmware update from this week.  It has brought my xbox dashboard up to version 2.0.6690.0.  I believe it came thru to my xbox on Tuesday of this week, but it could have came out earlier.  But I digress.

I am running a Samsung drive, ms25, with 1.4 iXtreme firmware.  I have been running this drive and firmware for quite some time now and have had no issues with it whatsoever.  I last played a game with it on Sunday of this week.  Well after I updated my dashboard, all of my backups no longer play.  They either come up as disc unplayable or I get the "To play this game, please insert it into an Xbox 360 console."  Now I know I should have not updated, but I read that it wasn't a functional update, and literally NO ONE has posted anything on the web about this update.  Hell, googling 2.0.6690.0 only gives like 5 hits, most of which are in french or I think russian.

Has anyone else updated and had any issues? Or is everyone running along fine and my drive just decided to turn into a bastard over night?  I am thinking of maybe adjusting the pots but I don't really wanna if I don't gotta.  Indeed I know the name of the game when it comes to MS, but I really wasn't expecting an update to break my ability to play backups, and I figured I'd have read more about it in the event that this was the case.

I am currently traveling so I didn't bring any originals with me to test.  I think I am going to hit up a video store later and rent something to test originals.

Any info/help/tips/anecdotes will be greatly appreciated.

I don't see the option to edit my post so I'll add some more info.

Upon further examination I think my stupid xbox has just died, or the update is hella malicious to me for some reason.  My 360 will not read burnt or original dvds either.  It either gives me the "Open Tray" option for my discs, or says they are audio cds and attempts to play the audio track.

Any ideas guys?

Yeah I'm starting to think the same thing.  It's just so damn weird that it died so randomly.  Like literally I was gaming just fine on Monday and I've seen MAYBE 5 dirty disc errors since I've had my xbox, which usually WERE because the disc was dirty.

Thanks for the input miller.  At least that helps me confirm it's time to mess with the pots and buy a new drive soon.  Or at least attempt some warranty service but who knows what horribly-difficult-to-mod drive they'll send back.

Ummm... thats how things die....

People are like.. All of a sudden I got the 3ROL!!! It's been working fine for 2 years!...

Thats the definition of something breaking...

Now to address your problem.  Look into "rubberband" fixes and check to make sure the magnetic spindle in the middle has not become unglued.

I had similar problem but it bricked my system! See below:

Flashed Benq flawlessly. Everything was running perfect. Inserted new game and asked to update. Replied yes and update started but don't think it completed cause after reboot getting error 71 immediately after logo screen consistantly! Should not have accepted update.

Tried the following fixes:
1. Unplug/replug all cables, mem cards, drive, ect. "failed"
2. Press and hold sync button during boot "failed"
3. Press and hold Y and R trigger during boot "failed"
4. Burned/inserted cd of M$ update during boot "failed"
5. Restored DVD drive back to original FW "failed"
6. Various Combinations of all of the above! "failed"

Has anyone else run into this error 71? Is there a fix other that M$ support?

E71 is one of the few errors that CAN be caused by an update.

The only solution is to hold "sync" on the xbox.. press power.. (while still holding sync).. and don't let go of sync until the console is fully booted.

If that doesn't work only MS can fix the problem but you already voided your warranty so the box is dead. sad.gif

E74... is NOT cause by an update and is just cooincidence.  You can try a new AV cable to fix E74 erros or it is a broken connection in the GPU or ANA chip.  Xclamp fix is your best option.

I had an old box a while ago that e74'd straight after an update. Coincidence? Perhaps...
