x360 has wireless usb 2.0 which is a new technology developed by MS, it supports up to 255 devices or channels, so you could really support a massive lan party in a single room, you could have 64 xbox360's lan party connected with 4 people on each box and no interference from everyone else...

Oh, I read that you could only have 16, I thought it was an interview with one of the MS guys, but I guess I was wrong :P

so why limit the number of players to 4 on any one 360 if it could support so many more?  i understand that many games wouldn't be able to use more than 4...but a lot would.  not all games require split screen for multiplayer gaming...so it seems foolish to arbitrarily limit the system to 4 when the capability is so much greater.

I don't see why they would limit it to only 4 unless it has something to do with production costs, but there are very few games that I would feel comfortable having more than 4 people on the screen, split screen or not. The fact is very few games would benefit from having more than 4 players. Plus who wants to fork over $300 more to buy the extra 6 wireless controllers?!?! and that's just at the standard price of $50 which they may very well be $60+ which would put it close to $400, I guess the bottom line is right now I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by not having 3 more controllers, my opinion might change is Sony releases anything that is interesting and releases that content consistantly.

Speculation:

The PS3 has 7 controllers cause they used bluetooth. MS pretty much rigged up their own, right? PS needed that tech so they bought it and figured 7 controlers would be better for marketing and a some games. They didn't have to spend the time to develope it, so 7 is typically better than 4 right? Well at least you can safely network Xbox's with the 255 channels. What I'm wondering is howyou find the channel? Anyone know?

Maybe they will release a "wireless multi-tap" ?  They have the USB 2.0 ports in the back which could be used for this sort of expansion.  Dont think for a second that MS would miss out on the opportunity to sell you something.

Question: Why more than 4 controllers?
Answer: Bomberman!

Seriously if you ever played Atomic Bomberman with 10 players on a PC, you'll beg for support for more controllers.
The problem is that todays games are just not innovative. It's always yet another first person shooter. I miss new things coming up like ChuChu Rocket on Dreamcast or practically every game from the Good Old Days TM
Besides, there are lots of sport games that would hugely benefit from this. The production cost is almost zero, they just need to add it to the XDK.
I really really hope they don't hardcode it to 4 player max, give developers the freedom to find new ideas for 5+ players!

So what if PS3 supports 7 boomerangs the games still have to support it. I remember Worms on the dreamcast forced you to pass the controller around even if you were playing with only 2 people. Sure the Dreamcast supported 4 controllers, and I had 4 controllers but the game didn't support it, so it was useless.

Do you really think the rich greedy bastards at EA are going to include 5+ player support in the new Madden if all but 1 console only has 4 controllers? there's no way in hell they're going to go the extra mile for that last platform to give you 5+ player support. Especially since there's no competition to worry about. If there was more than one platform... maybe.

Besides even sports and party games would get way too crowded at 5+ players... think of it this way... in sports games the camera would have to be zoomed further out loosing detail. In party games you'd get the same thing, in addition to certain game types that would have to be dropped with those extra players because the game simply wouldn't be able to handle it.

In the end if you can afford the extra $400 in controllers for the occasional 5+ player game you can probably afford another console and TV to do system link.
...and if you're complaint is that they games you like don't support system link... then you have to ask yourself if those same lazy developers would bother to go the extra mile in supporting 5+ controllers?

judging by the fact that everyone has wireless controllers, party games such as mario party or the like, are turn based anyway, just pass the controller.

that and I agree with twisted, just because the technology supports it dosent mean developers will go the extra mile to support it

the xbox360 can support 255 items, you think anyone would make a game that could have 255 players at a time? not that its plausible you fit 255 people into one room to play that game.

mythoughts.....

Can anyone clear up the PS3 controller count? so is it only 7 within 30 or so feet or 14 because 2 can run on the same frequency? Does anyone have an article that explains this because I have only seen people say "it can only have 7 within 30 feet" can anyone explain to me why?

Wow.. must every game be a FPS, racing, or sports game? No wonder MS keeps churning out the same game over and over again. Of course it'd suck to split a screen 5 or 6 ways, but lots of games can be played with several players without split screen. Oh wait... thats right, the xbox has very few of those games compared to the other two consoles.

bah, announcing any more controllers than 4 is pretty much like saying a car has 2 spare tires, whats the point? only about 1 in 100 or more games will even support more than 4 players on the same console. yea any more than 4 isnt worth braging about really. its one of those things that sony said 7 now everyone has 7 in thier head, its marketing. but its not an advantage cause 4 is all your gonna get in the real world of gaming.
