Frags: 3x Green, Orange/red Flashes
« on: February 19, 2005, 01:39:00 PM »

Hi there,

My xbox tries to start three times and flashes green with no screen. The third time is stays on with no screen and orange/red flashes. This happened after i tried to hotswap the xbox hd.

What did i do with my xbox:

Open xbox
start xbox, remove xbox hd ide cable and connect the xbox hd with my pc.
and run xboxhdm but this didnt work because xboxhdm keeps saying that my xbox hd wasnt unlocked.
So i closed my xbox and turn it on, but then the flashes came.

Does somebody know how to solve this?

Btw. xbox v1.1, no solder, and no mods installed

Bob

wirwars, check this http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/red-orange.php

Jstab, your problem is something else. Double check all your lpc points, then triple check them.

sounds like you fried the IDE controller... who knows what it is actually... but the hot swap probably killed it. boot with mod off?

I'm having the same problem.  Blink green and reboot a few times, then flash orange and red with no screen the whole time.  I followed the link that famine posted, but it wasn't any help.  I had trouble understanding what I was supposed to do.  Am I supposed to put a wire there?  There already is one.  I used a multimeter and got at most .2 ohms of resistance across every point he talked about connecting.
The part of the m/b around pin 5 is slightly discolored.  My dad, who is an electrical engineer looked at it and said it looked like the board might be fried, in which case i'd need to use a wire to replace the trace from the debug via to pin five, but when I showed him that it was getting about .1 ohms of risistance across that trace he didn't know what to say.

Thanks in advance!

slackr007, it looks like you're on the right track.

First, double check whether you're ACTUALLY getting the orange/red flashing problem. Plug your xbox in with the video cable in. (you don't need the hdd or disc drive plugged in, or even the video cable plugged into any tv, it just needs to be connected to the back of the xbox).

If the system flashes red and green, you're getting the common FRAG. If the system still flashes red and orange, read below.

As I said, you're on the right track. when I had this issue I used that link I gave above, but the pin that I had a problem with was different, so I just traced all the lpc points out to their connecting via's and made sure there was continuity.

Even after I fixed all the lpc points I was still having issues, so I ended up using alternate 3.3v, 5v and ground points strapped to the lpc (or modchip, if it's got pads for it depending on which chip you're using).

Here's a thread that's got alternate points for all the lpc points (if you have issues with other ones): http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=351796

And here's a good LPC diagnostics article: http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/lpc-diag.php

Ok, here are the results of my testing with a multimeter.
Voltage.  Everything checks out except these:
Pin 1 shows 0VDC instead of 0.2 VDC
Pin 5 shows .2VDC instead of 3.3VDC*note: someone soldered a wire onto it as discribed in the other link you posted previously.
Pin 6 shows 5.16VDC instead of 5VDC*may not be signifigant
Resistance:
Everything hovered around .2 ohms when I used the first link on your second post(http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=351796), but when I used teh second one, (http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/lpc-diag.php) i got some problems:
Pin 11(according to the pic) showed 1638 ohms
Pin 4(according to pic) showed 4.04 M ohms(Mega ohms if im correct)
Pin 7(according to pic) kept climbing steadily.  I quit watching at 2500 ohms
*another note:  The picture was kinda blurry, so im not 100% sure that I got pin 7 measured correctly.
Hope you can get something from that to help me, cause I sure can't!
*final note: here are the differences b/w the 2 pictures according to the picture on http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/lpc-diag.php:
pin 7 isn't even labled on the other page
pin 6's place to check resistance is on the opposite side of the lpc in the other pic
pin 5 isn't labeled on the other page
pin 8 is in a way different place
pin 9 is on the opposite side of the lpc on the other pic(same prob as w/ pin 6)
pin 4's via for one pic is right next to its via for the other picture
pin 10's via is close, but different
pin 3 is the same in both pics
  pin 2 is the same
pin 11 doesn't have a via in the other picture

Well I'm not an electrical engineer, and like you, I also noticed some discrepancies between that LPC diagnostics page and my own results. Most of them weren't too different though.

You might want to remove the pin header and all wires you've got going, and start over. First concentrate on getting the box to boot with the original bios, check continuity across all the suspect points, then you can worry about reinstalling the mod.

Sorry I couldn't be much more help, but as far as I know, getting continuity on all the required points is all that's required (as long as there's no bridges).

And that second pic in the lpc diagnostics guide is pretty messed up, since all the numbers are off relative to standards and the picture right above it. He wrote a table so you can figure out which pin should be what.

Ummmm............. I don't have a mod chip.  This xbox is all origional except for a wire soldered onto the back as discribed in the first link in this post by you famine.  That was put there by the owners step-dad before I was able to get ahold of it.  The part of the board around the via he put the wire into is slightly discolored like he may have melted it a bit.  Should I still remove the wire?  Thanks for all your help thusfar!
