Fan Speed Increases On Startup After Thermal Upgrade?
« on: March 10, 2006, 07:03:00 AM »

hi guys,

i just upgraded my thermal compound to arctic silver 5 on both gpu and cpu, reassembled correctly and when i started it up the fans went from normal speed and increased speed up to the dashboard faster than usual. everything seems to be ok when in the dashboard but i dont want to risk it...

could this be because of the as5 setting in? or maybe the heatsinks not tight enough to the chips?

please help

do you have a game in the drive?

that didnt happen to me when i added AS5.

could you have mistaken the sound of the jet  taking off (dvd drive) for the fans?

and has it happened more times than once?

if so Id be concerned,

if not and it boots fine, id say dont sweat it

there was no game in the drive.

i took it apart again and it seems the gpu heatsink is able to "wiggle" abit from side to side, but not up and down.

also does it matter which way the clamps go down? as in roatational?

ok just took it apart again and fiddled with the clamps and tightened them abit and when put back together to start it booted usually with normal fan speeds so im guessing the connection between heatsink and gpu had a gap which caused the fan speed to increase.

im guessing thats what it was but if anyone else has any thoughts let me know. i will test to see if its ok

hmm no games ....

does the fans do this consistantly?

The X clamps can only go on one way.
As for the movement, mine moves slightly.... close to none.
how much does it move? 1/4 in? 1in?

Im not sure if the fans are even temperature activated? kinda acting like a fan controller?
...meaning the fans speed up due to temperature increase.

can anyone confirm deny this?

can you post a pic of what you ve done. sounds dumb but ......maybe we could see something.....

ok well i put the mobo and everything back into the metal casing as i originally did and the fans did the same increasing procedure. i took out again and put just resting in the back casing of the 360, booted up and normal

now im confused  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

maybe this narrows down possibilites ??? or increases them  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

i will take a pic of the bottom and top and have them up in 10 mins

ok well ive left it on in the case and played a dvd for about 10 mins and the heatsinks are mildly warm im going to try playin a game now and see how that goes.

im not sure whats wrong with when the mobo is in the metal casing, maybe the casing pushes the clamps up and thus pushing the heatsinks?

Myself i think it was a fluke.

Like i said b4 if it does it consistantly then Id be worried.
but if it only happened once then Id just chauk it up as shit happens....

And my question still stands if anyone can answer:

Do the fans speed up due to temperature increase.?

anyone know what the problem with the mobo inside the metal casing could be?

Could it be the metal case vibrating?

no the fans are litterally revving up to like full speed.

this only occurs when the mobo is in the metal case but not when i have it rested on the case

ok, i kinda feel a little stupid now.

what may seem like a small thing that might not make much difference are the screw holes for the clamps on the bottom of the metal case. obviously when you tighten these the clamps pull down the heatsinks.

guess who didnt think to screw the clamps back to the metal case after putting the mobo in....

... me   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/jester.gif)

oh well, this might help some people in the future!

Glad you figured it out.  I just saw this thread and your comment above.

If anything, you want your heatsinks to be HOTTER after upgrading your thermal compound.  This means that the compound is MORE effective in bringing the heat AWAY from the CPU and dissipating it over a larger surface (the heatsink).

thanks for the reply.

after playing for about 4 hours or so it started freezing on me every 5 minutes and picture going jaggy (heiroglipics or whatever you call them) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

so after thinking what the hell have i done ive screwed it up i took of the gpu heatsink, cleaned the gpu, reapplied as5 and started playing again all was good and has been til now :touch wood:

before i did the 12v fan mod i noticed the heatsinks alot hotter and my 1st thought was oh dear, that cant be good but i thought later that if the heatsinks were hot then maybe that is better as it would be getting the heat away.
