Fire fear prompts Xbox cable swap

Xbox was launched in 2001 MS has said it will replace more than 14 million power cables for its Xbox consoles due to safety concerns.
The company said the move was a "preventative step" after reports of fire hazard problems with the cables.

Xboxes made before 23 October 2003 for all regions but Europe need a new cable while consoles in Europe made before 13 January 2004 require a replacement.

MS said it had received 30 reports of minor injury or property damage due to faulty cables. The firm said fewer than one in 10,000 consoles had experienced component failures.
The recall affects almost three quarters of all Xboxes sold around the world since its launch in 2001.

'Damage caused'

In a statement, it added: "In almost all instances, any damage caused by these failures was contained within the console itself or limited to the tip of the power cord at the back of the console."

But in seven cases, customers reported sustaining a minor burn to their hand.

In 23 cases, customers reported smoke damage, or minor damage to a carpet or entertainment centre.

"This is a preventative step we're choosing to take despite the rarity of these incidents," said Robbie Bach, senior vice president, MS home and entertainment division.

"We regret the inconvenience, but believe offering consumers a free replacement cord is the responsible thing to do."

Consumers can order a new cable from the Xbox website or by telephoning 0800 028 9276 in the UK.

MS said customers would get replacement cords within two to four weeks from the time of order. It advised users to turn off their Xboxes when not in use.

A follow-up to Xbox is expected to released at the end of this year or the beginning of 2006.

The guy was sooooooo slow and couldn't speak 2 words german properly. I asked him: "Should we speak english?", but he just said that he can speak german. Yeah, right  huh.gif

"S like Buffle? Is that right?" - "No, BITCH! It's S like Siegfried" - "Fifi?" -  grr.gif

I suggest there was someone sitting behind him and controlling him. biggrin.gif
After 13 Minutes...there was suddenly a friendly young woman on the phone smile.gif

I don't trust things like this.    A clever way of checking where all the early xbox are now perhaps?  I never registered mine in the first place.

Still ordered a free cable though!

the 3 cord limit sucks though. I have 7 xboxes here that all qualify but they will only replace 3 per household.

Apparently my date does not qualify.  But as I mentioned in the previous post, I can't be sure that both of my powercords are really from the period affected or not.

"    Manufacturing Date:  7/6/2004

Your Xbox is unaffected. Your Xbox does not require a replacement cord and one will not be shipped.

If you believe you have reached this messages in error, please click here. "

**Funny side note, In firefox, I don't have anything to click on where it says: "please click here"

Direct Link  (For US users anyways, mileage [or kilometerage] may vary)

I just got off the phone with the guy. I said a lot of stuff, He said a lot of stuff, but at the end this is an exact quote:  "Based on the serial number and manufacturing date that you provided I feel that you are safe."

So again, the answer to the whole issue of refurbished xboxes and powercords. is:
"I feel that you are safe."
