Because you need codecs first before a media player works. Also, porting entire codecs allows different devs to use the codecs in their own projects.

Great news! I wanted two things out of my JTAGs, Ping limit removed amd a decent mediaplayer. Seems both my wishes is to be fulfilled!

Mediaplayers are cheap but aren't they usually bad too? Real picky about which format subtitles are in, no options for multiple audiotracks, no support for DTS and/or Dolby Digital, no network support and so on. If they are updateable then the developer just don't care to release any updates...

I dare to say that NOTHING comes close to XBMC on the original xbox, only that the xbox1 won't play HD. Sure, there is a long way from this to something like XBMC but if it gets merged with, say, Freestyle Dash then we can look forward to regular updates!

Yes you can get a mini hd capable pc that is quieter and uses less electricity but can it play xbox/360 and emulators!?  Plus isn't this an xbox modding forum.
True my JTAG had to be a Jasper cos its the only version that hasn't RROD'd on me.
Surely and development can only be fantastic news!

bad?, leagues ahead of the 360.. example playon mini does DTS HD and DD, has built-in gigabit (!!!) port, updatable with lots of firmware updates, cross flash-able too.

XBMC does pwn them all though, it out classes pretty much every media player out there. xbmc live on a revo is simply stunning for example.

Exactly!!! The stock mediaplayer of the 360 isn't even worth the name.

And who knows, if this project is continued maybe one day we'll have a mediaplayer on the 360 to match xbmc. If the very competent people behind Freestyle Dash picks up on this anything could happen!

Sorry bout the curve ball but we were comparing media players so thought I'd mention the PS3-(bad word round here?) Showtime media player can now do 1080p content, a smooth mkv player!
