Developers Working on Codec Libraries for Homebrew 360s
Posted by XanTium | April 3 10:45 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Logic-Sunrire brings us the news that a group of developers are porting codec libraries to homebrew Xbox360s (JTAG and DevKit).
At this moment, only mpeg1 work. The ffplay, ffmpeg and libxvidcore libs have been ported, but they still have to solve some issues with SDL.
When everything is finished and working, you will be able to find their project on a git or google code so you can freely use it. This will allow developers to integrate these libs into their own 360 homebrew projects (FSD for example) or use it to develop a video player for example.

Here's a proof-of-concept of what they did so far:

The proof-of-concept binary has also been released. To test it, put a mpeg1 video named "test.mpg" is the same directory as the default.xex.

awesome news to hear ! imo, this is one of the most important features a homebrew enabled 360 lacks.
my old original xbox was a true media center, however playing avi's on a large HDTV looks like crap.

Awesome. Video would've seemed pointless if he didn't show the X Dashboard on top of the video while it was playing. I can't wait to play some MKVs, no conversion! Hopefully this can be combined with Samba or compatible with UPnP servers like uShare.

On another note, why are the French so interested in furthering 360 JTAG development? I would think that France would have people working on PS3 and JTAG would be like everywhere else (nearly completely forgotten other than the fact that we can get DLC and XBLA 'for free' and emulators that were written over a year ago).

Is there any chance another exploit will be found so I can homebrew my Kinekt dash 360? I really wanted to wait for JTAG but I'd just bought my console and wanted to play it so I was forced to update.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

If this helps create a media center, I will finally get a jtag 360.
