i don't remember saying its illegal... however in your case the fact that your father works for MS and you have a stolen devkit means you are both in trouble.

unless you are a registered developer with MS credentials OF YOUR OWN... then you didn't get the unit from MS officially... so at some point the unit was stolen either from MS directly or from a registered developer.

Well, If you live in the Netherlands, then it wouldn't be any problem.
Cause stealing is not illegal here (When you have a good story). If you bought the kit from someone that u thought to be a trustful person, then nobody can do a thing.
Or another scenario is when you buy something that is stolen and it is sold 3 times before you buy it then it's all yours and nobody can get it back.

Pretty sick here in The Netherlands, I know... I've been robbed many times.. Never got my stuff back.. And the people who stolen it didn't have to go to jail or do a thing!

So I don't know where ya from.. But if you want the dev kit legal then move to the Netherlands...

However, I wouldn't trust my employee who takes a devkit to his home without asking. How should I trust him? Maybe he will leak it and release it to the internet?

but what if you put it behind a router, then the WAN isn't able to see mac-adresses inside the LAN, no?

but I really wouldn't mess too much with potentially "hot" hardware.
don't forget that kid that posted pics of a 360 his stepdad took home, long before 360 release, bet his stepdad got in a lot of trouble and got fired too.

I just got an XDK, thought it was a regular 360 with a huge hard drive on it. I want it to play games, I'm going to rip off the side car, throw it in the garbage, and use it as a regular 360. Any objections?
