How did your testing go?
Xbox live cant read the OSIG from Nand, but it can read it from the drive. What xbox live does is read the OSIG From the drive which allows it to get the correct firmware. I recently did this with my benq (fat mode) drive and the update flashed a new benq file on the drive even though my xbox OSID Nand reads as a lite on.
I didn't believe that this would work either, I accidentally found this method by flashing my xbox with the stock benq file that wasn't spoofed, but had the correct key. The only reason i did the update was to get access to netflix again. I didn't care about playing games for the moment. I didn't even care if my drive got bricked. When the drive was spoofed the update just failed, over and over. Then when i flashed it with the stock benq firmware with my xbox's key the update worked 100% the next time i tried it. Then i flashed back to lite plus, non spoofed. From what i can tell microsoft removed the protection that makes the OSID on the Nand and match the OSID of the drive. My only assumption is that they did this to cut down on labor cost to refurbish the xbox's faster and cheaper than before. As well as give them the newest protected drive protecting themselves form copied games. The only problem would be flashing the Nand, to microsoft this step probably costs to much in labor hense the reason the check was removed.
I doubt it was to help small and pop shops that fix xbox 360s. I'm sure it was a cost factor to them when they refurbish there own systems.
Tell me how it went. If you used the stock firmware, with your drive key the update will work. You just have to manually copy the key over in jungle flasher, hitting the spoof button will spoof the drive as well. This is a common mistake and that is the reason for the lack of information on this issue. Everyone just hit the spoof button and assumed it was a no go since there benq was spoofed as a lit on or so on. This is also why some drives bricked. Xbox live read the OSID as a lite on instead of a benq (because of spoof) and flashed the wrong file. If the drive reads as a benq you get benq firmware. The Nand is not read to do the update.
Yep done a couple of consoles now and it works lol.
So for people who are wondering you don't need the correct drive all you need is the right drive key and the drive (MUST NOT) be spoofed just leave it with its own standard firmware do a manual key spoof and hit update.
Not sure why but Microsoft seem to have made it easier to replace drives for future proofing possibly im not sure but yes definitely works.
Cheers for the info mat82284 would have never tried this by myself
