Xbox 360 Controller Chatpad Drivers v0.0.3a for Windows

When i execute chatpad_control_i386.exe it runs but it closes so fast that I am not able to copy anything. If you have better instructions on how to obtain the text let me know and I will try and help you. Anyhow, I managed to obtain a screen shot of it running. BTW, the chatpad does light up while I click and run chatpad_control_i386.exe.

That looks exactly as it should be...I'm not sure why it's quitting.  Can you use the Start Menu, Run option, and then type "cmd.exe"?  Then type "cd c:\chatpad" and press enter (use whatever the proper path is to the chatpad files, instead of c:\chatpad).  Then, type the name of the executable, i.e. "chatpad_control_i386.exe" and press enter.

After you let it run and wait, you should be able to see what happens when it quits.

My hopefully LAST debug-information request is, after you get a screenshot of the above steps, could you try downloading DebugView?  It's a very small file, and you can get it here:  http://technet.micro...ernals/bb896647

If you run Dbgview.exe and turn on all the options in the Capture menu besides "Log Boot", then you should see a bunch of text scroll by if you then run chatpad_control_i386.exe.  Would you please use the File->Save As option in DebugView to save the log results, after the chatpad control utility has crashed?  Hopefully this log, or the screenshot above, will give me a hint about it.  sad.gif  It's frustrating because it works on some 32-bit XP systems, such as my own, but apparently not on yours.  I will try to figure out why, though!

Are you using an official "Made for Windows" controller, or a controller from an XBox 360 system?  I can try to check if anyone has tries the normal 360 controller with Windows XP for comparison.

Done.  The exit status is -1.

If you still want me to use the other method let me know, I will do it tomorrow. I'm going to bed. BTW I am using an official xbox360 controller and chatpad. As far as I understand this driver is a standalone driver that will enable keyboard and mouse control via a official xbox360 controller and chatpad. I really hope that is correct and i'm not wasting your time.

Someone else has gotten that same error.  The drivers SHOULD work with the normal xbox 360 controller, but it could be that there's some problem I'm missing since I only have the Windows one to test with.  It's a semaphore timeout error and I'm not sure why it's happening.  I will try to compare your test results with the other person's results and see if I can figure anything out.  If you want to try the DebugView capture I described that would be helpful, but otherwise I'm afraid I will have to ask you to wait until I can get a new version built if I figure anything out.  Thanks for the help!

All known issues are now entered into the Google code site, here:

http://code.google.com/p/chatpad-super-driver/issues/list

If you see something that's not reported there, please send me an email or something, gtschemer at gmail.com.  Or you could try to use the Google code issue reporting system, but I'm not sure if that will work properly right now.

I'm extremely excited to see the progress on this project!  Congrats on the work.  Has there been any progress getting the wireless controller to function with the chat-pad yet?  This will make my soon to be built HTPC with wireless mouse/keyboard (360 controller/Chat-pad) function like a dream!  Thanks again for your contribution and filling in the gap MS left open by not releasing a driver.

**EDIT**

Is the driver simply for the chat pad, or does it also emulate the controller as mouse in a windows environment, or will I need to also use a separate program for that?

The driver also supports using the controller thumbpads as a mouse.  By default, pressing the "people"/MSN button on the controller will toggle this behavior.

I have not yet gotten a wireless controller or looked into it.  Presumably the first thing we would need to do is figure out the messaging protocol, but I think there is some existing wireless driver source that could help with that.  The next thing to do is see if there's some way to communicate with the chatpad through whatever message scheme the wireless controller uses.  smile.gif  Hopefully ddxcb will update us if he finds out anything before I start working on it.

Good news!  I hope you find some time and a few extra dollars to get to the wireless.  It really is a neat little keyboard I would love to keep with me on the couch (:  For the first time, I am jealous of the wired Xbox controller. ddxcb, good luck in you search for answers.  We are cheering for you!

Just a thought...we should probably ask on the mp3car forum to make sure we get the most common combination of controller and dongle/wireless base.  I seem to remember once upon a time there was a wireless dongle thing that went with the wireless controllers, but now it's been replaced with a wireless base station (or maybe it's the other way around).  I don't want to try to find the discontinued hardware, so hopefully we can both get the current stuff and test with that.  biggrin.gif

I'm following this board to track your progress.  Maybe you should start a donation for the wireless controller fund, I'm sure there are plenty that would contribute a few bucks to get you one.  Thanks again!

I will happily become a bugtester for the drivers when you have started to work on a wireless driver. But I think I will have a pirated version of the wireless receiver. But what I have read you use the same drivers as if you would have a original one. So i belive that's the same construction but just from another company. But I will let you know when you have started working on a wireless one.

Keep up the good work!

That could work out well if you just get a used wireless controller then, and I'd get the new wireless controller + dongle or whatever, so we could each experiment with different hardware.

Here is the information taken from the command prompt as you instructed:

G:\chatpad>chatpad_control_i386.exe

(other info here)

If you're still up for testing, try this version of the control utility:
http://code.google.c...ntrol_test4.exe

It uses a different initialization sequence that has worked for some people.  It seems there are at least two different hardware versions, so I may need to add some auto-detect code if this works for you.
