OK I must be doing something wrong because I cannot get my Zephyr system running Freeboot with the AUD_CLAMP smc patch no matter what I do. It was running Freeboot with the original JTAG wiring, albeit with the random E79 and system reset problems which is why I wanted to try this fix. This is exactly what I'm doing step by step:
- Using original NAND backup for Freeboot image
- Extract smc.bin from Xell image (my Zephyr is CB 4580 and requires the Falcon version)
- Use smc_io.exe to patch smc.bin with basic patch, no problems
- Build Freeboot image exactly according to instructions, placing patched smc.bin in the data folder
- Flash AUD_CLAMP patched Xell to NAND via USB (Xell boots fine)
- Update to Xellous via USB flash drive (Xellous boots fine)
- Try to update to Freeboot via USB flash drive (no go, usually only middle green light but no video, or sometimes gets stuck in a repeating rebooting pattern, sometimes E79 error)
It seems to me it can't be my wiring because the AUD_CLAMP patched Xell boots just fine every time, and so does Xellous when I update. Plus I can see plain as day I have a solid connection to the AUD_CLAMP solder point on the motherboard. I'm not a soldering noob. I also assume since I had to use the Falcon version of Freeboot with the original JTAG wiring, I'd have to use the Falcon version with the new method. Is that right?
I've tried building the Freeboot image both manually with ibuild.exe and using Freeboot Toolbox Maker 2.4. I've tried flashing the NAND directly via my USB adapter and via updating through Xellous. I've tried patching the smc.bin file manually using smc_io.exe and using SMC Updater 0.2. I've tried manually injecting the patched smc.bin into a pre-built Freeboot image and letting ibuild.exe import the file. NOTHING is working. The closest I can get to breathing life back in the Xbox is when it boots and displays the Xbox 360 logo, but keeps rebooting on its own, or rebooting to no video, or rebooting to E79. Everything was running fine before I switched the wiring, except for the random E79 and system settings reset like everyone else experiences with a Zephyr system.
Am I missing something obvious? Should I be getting the smc.bin file from somewhere other than a Xell image? I know how to build a Freeboot image because the one I built for the old wiring worked fine. BTW I also tried to flash XBR just in case it was a Freeboot issue, and with XBR flashed the Xbox would boot with the middle green light and no video, but no red ring error. I am at my wit's end with this because I've tried everything I can think of. Maybe someone else with a Zephyr can tell me EXACTLY step by step what they did to get this working with Freeboot. Also, where you got the smc.bin file.
Good thing I have a couple Xenon JTAG 360s as backup.
