Fatxplorer 2.0 Preview
« on: May 16, 2010, 04:42:00 PM »

Hi guys, I bet some of you have noticed that there hasn't been an update for a while. I will tell you what I have been doing.

First, I am in high-school, and I play a sport (crew) and it is in full swing. I recently took part in the Stotesbury Cup regatta and my team did really well. I don't get home until 8pm during the week and I do homework for the remainder of my night. So I rarely work on it during the week. I do have time on the weekends to work on it, but not extensively. This is one of the reasons for the lack of updates.

The second reason is because there is a very large update underway. I have some new coding standards and I am trying to build them into the program as best I can. FATXplorer 2.0 will be a huge milestone that will be remembered in the Xbox 360 scene. Here are some of the new features, enhancements, and fixes that may appear in v2.0:

Improved Licensing System
Licensing, being the system that controls the trial version and the licensed version, has been subject to a complete rework. This is how it will work for..
New Customers
You will pay securely via PayPal and receive an automatic e-mail containing your serial number. This will be instant. You will enter that serial number into FATXplorer along with your e-mail address. It will now activate online. Online activation verifies the serial number server side to make sure that it is not fake. It will also create an entry for you in my SQL database with your name, e-mail, serial number, and two boolean flags. The first flag determines if the serial number has been activated. It is set to true when you activate FATXplorer, and set to false when you use the deactivator. The second flag is for refund and blacklisting purposes. Only modifiable by me. Once it does all that, the program will launch and you will be able to use it.
Existing Customers
No extensive modifications have been made to the serial number algorithm. Meaning that your existing serial number will work. What you would do it enter your serial number and e-mail, click activate online, and it will create an entry in my database for you. Quick and easy!

This new activation system eliminates the need for my license tool completely. You can literally activate it within a minute after purchase if you click your mouse fast enough. ;p

Brand New UI
The UI is being completely redesigned with better icons, tooltips, and navigation systems to make the UI more intuitive and prettier to the eye. Behold FATXplorer 2.0's new main form:

The device form is still under development and is not ready to be shown. Many other forms will also be redesigned.

New Default Skin
With the release of DXperience 2010.1, it includes a new skin: Office 2010. It is displayed in the above picture and it will be the new default skin.

TreeView Performance
Tired of the Cache folder taking 15 minutes to load? In 2.0, this is no longer a problem! The tree view now loads 3x as fast thanks to a tip from Goldbl4d3.

New About Form
No program is complete without an epic about form. That is why I got rid of the message box and created an awesome about form.

License Information: Displays some information about the activated license.
Black box: Covers up the link to FATXplorer's website.

Disk Maintenance and Cleanup
A new wizard designed to help clean up your storage device or backup is currently in development. Not sure what options to check? No problem, there are detailed tooltips over each check box that tell you. More options may be added/removed. Stay tuned for updates. Here is a preview:

.NET Framework 4
I immediately switched to Visual studio 2010 the day it came out, but I still made FATXplorer target .NET 3.5. Reason being, there are no good obfuscators that support .NET 4 yet. Once {smartassembly} or CodeVeil supports it, the switch will be made. This may or may not happen before 2.0 is released.

USB Support
With the release of the new dashboard update, this has been a highly requested feature. As of right now, it is partially working. I am working with Anthony to try and resolve a few issues.

New Website
FATXplorer will launch with an official website, which is currently in development and it not ready to be revealed. It will host everything related to the program.

Cumulative Change Log
Here is the change log that I have compiled:
CODE
FIXES
-The device menu item is now enabled if that device is closed. Previously, when you close a device, you would be unable to reload it because the item was disabled.
-A few tooltips weren't appearing when a MU is opened. They now appear.
-Improved Gamertag parsing code to fix a rare error that would sometimes occur if the profile is invalid.
-When the Display Folder Type setting is enabled, installed Xbox 360 titles are now structured correctly. (Thanks Nick M.)
-When overwriting files, you will no longer see duplicate nodes. (Thanks Mattia)
-Fixed an issue where closing a backup would change the open backup item's tooltip text.

ENHANCEMENTS:
-Tree Views now load nearly 3 times as fast. (Thanks Goldbl4d3)
-Device name now appears on the parent node if it is available.
-Some loading status messages have been updated.
-Bookmark menus have been slightly improved.
-Some icons have been updated.
-License system has been updated to the latest version available at the time of this update.
-Improved security features you do not see.
-The Copy Serial Number to Clipboard button has been removed.

NEW FEATURES:
-Added a donate button in the links menu.. Just in case some people out there are generous. :D
-Added a new partition right click item: Extract Partition. (Thanks Nick M.)
-Added an Update Registration Details/Register button the the license tools menu so you can change your registered name, organization, and serial. You can also activate the program without restarting it.
-Added a brand new theme/skin: Office 2010 Blue. Check it out!

Possible Defragmenter, Error Checker and Formatter/Reformatter
These features may be in 2.0. Stay tuned for updates.

Improved Security
The security features have been vastly improved. You will not notice them, but this will prevent any unauthorized use and make cracking it MUCH harder. So don't expect a cracked version of v2.0.

Offline Licenses
It is now possible to use the program offline. Offline licenses cost a non-refundable $30 paid as a gift via PayPal. You will get a unique serial number that will not require online activation. You will need to contact me for details on this.

Probable Price Change
Once v2.0 is released, the price will most likely go up $5, for a total of $25. You can thank users of pirated copies for this. Before the famed software cracker CYRAX disabled my online logger, the hit count of modified FATXplorer executables reached about 300. And that was late 2009. I can't imagine what that number would be now. So, to make up for that, I improved security (mentioned above) and I will be raising the price since I know there will be a huge jump in sales once this version is released. The price, however, at the time of this post is $20. So if you don't want to pay $5 more, I would recommend buying it now and then upgrade to v2.0 for free when it is released.

Please comment, discuss, and perhaps post ideas and suggestions.

Hey, I've been trying to use USB Xtaf Gui and discovering issues with corruption.  Can I get my hands on a test build or something and see if your app works properly where USB Xtaf Gui is failing?  I don't care if it expires five minutes after I run it, I'd just like to know it works before I drop the cash.

Either way, congrats to you at your age.  I started a small software business when I was in college and it just about paid for my education.  I don't blame you for tightening the registration security, and I hope you make a nice profit along the way.  Nobody seems to blame the modders for charging what they charge, and you deserve to be compensated for your work just the same as anyone else.

A beta will be released soon. Keep checking this forum.

I must be missing something here..

What features are you getting that you can't get from currently available free software?

When I started messing around with applications that support accessing a USB drive, I was under the impression that only XTAF was available to do this..  For free, but had issues with not being able to inject multiple files at a time, who wants to do one file at a time?

Then I find this FATXplorer that supposedly has or will have USB support, but you cannot drag and drop your files onto the application, and it costs $30.00??

I then found Modio which also supports USB, and has drag and drop, and is free.

Curious what are the unique features of this program that you cannot get from the other free apps out there currently.

You will see. Once I make the main post with the complete feature list, you will see why it is better than the rest and why it is $30. So yeah, just wait. The post will be written when the program has been completed.
