XBox 360 commander scans all hard drives connected to the computer. It looks to see if the HDDSS is present to to verify the hard drive is for XBox 360. So a HDDSS must be present or it ignores the drive.
It will check to see if the HDDSS size matches the physical drive size. If they are different it will ask if you wish to update the HDDSS. If you do not update it it ask you which size to use to calculate the cluster chain size.

Also the latest version checks the cluster size for the partitions.

So, if I patch my 500 GB drive with an HDDSS for 250 GB, then Commander finds the drive and will ask me to update the HDDSS because the physical HDD size is 500 GB. Correct?

Yes. You can use any HDDSS. XBox 360 Commander will reconize the hard drive as an XBox 360 hard drive.

It will make a backup of the HDDSS found on the drive before patching it.

Ah, fair enough.  So i guess since my 1.5TB HDD doesn't have an official Xbox 360 HDDSS, it can't be recognized by Commander.  That is the problem that I've had with all other explorer applications out there too.  Bummer...  Is there no other way to recognize these unofficial drives? as I'm sure I'm not the only one out there with this issue.

Working on it. I am going to add a check for FATX partitions 1 and 3 on the drives. If they are there then I will assume that it is a usable XBox 360 hard drive. I am not going to check for partition 2 because it seems some drives don't have the emulation partition installed. I hope that this will get your drive reconized

My official 120GB on my JTAG box is now working.  I noticed a bug.  Seems like if you try to drag something out of the app, it locks the app into thinking it is still dragging no matter what.

Is there no way to manually right click and save off/on individual files/folders from the hard drive?  Drag and drop of files to and from would be nice or just rightclick and save menu option to save manually.

I can't drag and drop anything to extract it.  I can't find a way to extract any items.

According to the very first post, that functionality is on the to-do list.

XBox 360 Commander rev 4

Whats new? Drag files and folders to the file window to copy to HDD.

Right click on selected files and folders to extract from HDD.

Error checking of the files being added is nil so back up first!

Come on people, give me some feed back.

I tried rev 4 and now I get no files listed in the right side panel.  Rev 3 did show the files.

Excellent progress.  Rev 4 finally recognizes my 1.5TB HDD from my JTAG console.  The left window is displaying the directories, but my right window is completely blank too (as described above). Very excited to see a tool out there that can actually read these > 250GB drives.

Also, hovering over the "help" icon displays "toolStripDropDownButton2".

Hmmm....

None of the changes I made had anything to do with displaying the files. I will check this out.

I'm a computer programmer too and a simple change, even if it has nothing to do with another function, can cause something that worked fine to have issues.

I had an issue with a game I was working on that took me several weeks to track down.  It worked as it should when I ran it in debug build (not compiled yet) but when I compiled it, it behaved quite differently.  It was such a chore to track down.

LOL thanks.

Ok this is what is broken. do not click on partition 1. It breaks the display routine.

I will have this fixed next rev.

Very interesting.

Excellent.  Files show up no problem now.  Couple more bugs with the right clicking in the right window, etc.  But I'm sure that will all be cleared up in the next few builds.  Very excited to see how the rest of this awesome program comes together.

Thanks again!

First off, i've got to tell that i've just signed here in order to congratulate icepir8icepir8 for his awesome work.

For real, i'm using a 500G 2.5" (Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT) as my main hard drive, and your tool is the only one that actually opens it AND let me access the content.
That's just trully awesome.

However, there's still some issues.
First time i ran the soft, it poped out some info and if I answer [YES], it throws some exceptions:

I think that it's path related. Some kind of illegal characters might have been used (check the double "\" in the path, are you escaping it for the alertbox or is it hardcoded?)

However, if i ever choose to not update the HDSS. And choose to use the calculated HDD size, the soft loads fine but... i get empty partitions:
(IMG:http://i43.tinypic.com/32zsxo9.jpg)
(IMG:http://i43.tinypic.com/2i9h4lz.jpg)

BUT, if i choose not to update the HDSS AND not to use the calculated size... everything runs fine:

(IMG:http://i40.tinypic.com/wlvmad.jpg)

To make a long story short, there's an error while trying to update/save the hdss.bin. I can't really tell if mine was updated or not.
All i know is, now i can finally open my drive from usb using your tool.
Thank you very much, you made my day.
Hope to see v0.5 soon.

PS:
Can you please use some bigger icons, your soft will just look better.

I can only browse through directories by clicking on the left side (tree view). Clicking on the right side (folders), does nothing, hope this little bug gets fixed (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Keep it up mate, it's just one of the best tool outhere.

Thanks for the bug report. Yes it is invalid characters in the filename. it is trying to use the drive serial number from the HDDSS area on your drive. It's not there and so it is garbage. It does not updated the calculated size on the HDD because it crashed before it can update the info on the HDD.

I will have it fixed next rev.
