Xbox 360 Commander

Hey icepir8icepir8, sorry to bother you with my problem but I think I've really dug myself into a deep hole. I was working on my 360's 20GB Seagate HDD on my PC (trying to get Rockband games saves to load) but things have really gone down hill. The first thing I did before editing it was make a backup image (.xbc) using commander, other then that however I did not back up anything else specifically (like HDDSS, unless that is in the backup). Since then I formatted knowing I had a backup but the backup wasn't restoring in commander (the progress bar would just stay at 0%). I was able to restore the image in Xport 360 although it warned the signatures did not match the destination but I arrogantly disregarded that.

I've now gone to put the HDD in my 360 but it says (No storage devices found) but the HDD is still recognizable in commander and other programs. Is there a way I could restore my HDD back to its original state it was before all my stupidity using the backup? Thanks for your help.

The HDDSS is incorrect for your drive now. You need to restore the original one to the drive. Commander doesn't backup the HDSS when Backing up. This could be and issue for you if you don't have the original because a factory Xbox checks to see if the HDDSS matches your drive and is signed by MS. I have no idea how to recover the HDDSS if you don't have it backed up. You may need to replace your drive.

Thanks for the quick response! I still have a couple questions however. I have a spare drive (that has been used in another 360) that I can format/edit. Is there anyway to restore my backup onto the "new" spare drive that I have? If so then would you mind briefly explaining or if not would there be anyway to restore my backup so I can use it again? All of my saves since I got my 360 when it first came out are on there and so its really important to me...

Did rev did you make the backup with? The latest rev uses a newer format for the backups. The whole idea behind the backups was so that you could transfer files from 1 hdd to another. The fact that Commander is becoming more than that now is effort to make it more useful. If the new drive is less than 250GB you should have no problems restoring from the backup to it.
Before you try to restore the backup make an image file of the hard drive if you have the space. Commander currently does not do this. Next rev will. I used WinHex to make mine. There are other programs that can do this also. If you don't have the free space on your computer to image the drive backup the HDDSS. This is a must. Everything else can be recreated/restored but not the HDDSS for the drive.
How large is the xbc file?

Thanks again for your help.

I made the backup with the newest revision (r22 I believe). As I said before, the hard drive is only 20GB but when I try and restore under commander the progress bar doesn't move, it just stays at 0% for an hour. The xbc file is 13.7 GB in size. So are you saying I should try and restore my image (.xbc) to my replacement hdd (after making a backup image and getting the HDDSS.bin from the replacement) and it should work?

Thanks, thats reassuring for the moment. Sorry to bother you with one more question but is there anything I need to do in between backing up the spare drive and restoring the image. For instance, do I need to format the spare drive using commander or the xbox 360 or prepare it in anyway or I can just go right ahead restoring right after backing up the HDDSS of the spare.

Also if the restore just stays at 0% can I use another program (like Xport 360 or winhex) to restore the .xbc?

Thanks so much for your help again.

No the xbc file is only understood by Commander.

you can make a copy of the image file and open it with commander then do the restore into the copied image file. then you can restore the new image back into the hdd. But make sure you have an unaltered image file for backup.

A nice little side effect of the new backup/restore.

Do a backup of your drive. Then immediately do a restore from the new backup.

Woo-la! Your HDD has been defragged.

After some more testing I will release rev 23. tonight or tomorrow. I think I've fixed the Win7 64bit Drag and Drop problem!

and drag & drop is still not working under win 7 x64. how about a simple insert file/extract file command on the right-click menu ? like in the modio hdd explorer. but modio sucks because it takes a minute to start. xbox360Commander is the fastest hdd explorer i've seen so far but it doesn't work for me.

great little app here, icepir8icepir8. there was no hiccups transferring from 20gb to 250gb. only 1 issue though - I thought that it would backup partition 2 (xbox 1 compatibilty) during full backup to image. but ..it's not that important.

I've got the same issue with it detecting my actual HDD in my PC. How do I find if it has an HDSS? I need to get rid of it so I can open my 360 drive

EDIT: I fixed it. Just downloaded the 120GB HDDSS.bin file and opened it in Winhex then searched for the first line in the HD it was detecting wrong and zero'd it out... working great now!

Its good to hear when things work good. The bug reports are need and help, but there are times you need to hear things are working. You can get so beat down thing no one is having success and you fell like just quiting.

Special thanks to those who show their appreciation by a donation. I lets me know they found value in what I do.

I think the next rev will have the detection by HDDS check removed. It is not really needed and it cause problems for some users. Also looking into adding USB virtual drive support.

It would be really nice if somebody could do a review of all the programs like XBox 360 Commander. Then ppl could make a better choice when they need to. Plus I would like to see how XBox 360 Commander compares to the others out there.

Many thanks for your application. I donate to you, you deserve it!

I just installed in my windows (win 7 64 bits) and seems to be OK, my XBOX 60GB HDD was recognized. However how to transfer the files that is currently in my computer HDD? I tried copy/paste but unsuccessfully. I only can see the XBOX HDD in the Xbox commander and no other HDD so how to transfer the files from one HDD to another? Sorry my doubt seems pretty basic  uhh.gif  but I just start into the jtag business, hehe
